A timely and valuable report by the House of Commons Defence committee. But will ministers heed its warnings and follow its advice?
Serious capability gaps in the UK's ability to meet growing threats in the High North top the Defence Committee's conclusions in its latest report.
These must be addressed, alongside other concerns, if the UK is to deter Russia in the region ⬇️

Three waves of ballistic missiles have been launched at Kyiv by Russian “humanitarians” since yesterday evening. They used 21 missiles. Unfortunately, numerous sites across the city have been hit and damaged: ordinary residential buildings, energy facilities, infrastructure at one of the railway stations and the metro, shopping malls, and businesses. Even a monastery is among the damaged sites. Our emergency services are working at all the affected locations. Twelve of our regions came under Russian attack overnight. In Kyiv and across the regions, 34 people were injured, including five children. As of now, two people have been confirmed killed. My condolences to their families and loved ones.
Almost immediately after another round of talks, Russia launched a pointed attack. This means there has been no real change in its attitude toward everything that is happening. It is important to keep trying to find the right solutions to end this war. But when Russia responds to negotiations with ballistic missiles, real pressure on Russia is needed to bring about different steps – steps toward ending the killing. Stronger air defenses and the rapid delivery of missiles, the ability to destroy ballistic missile launchers, sanctions over the war – all of this must be in place. I am grateful to everyone who sees the situation for what it is and acknowledges the reality. The aggressor deserves to be treated accordingly. Ukraine deserves support. People's lives deserve protection. Thank you to everyone who stands with Ukraine!

This is nothing less than Appeasement. The United States should be leading the Free World in standing up to tyranny and aggression, not allowing its representatives to praise Vladimir Putin and pull a veil over Russia's war crimes.

Strategy must turn into capability. The Strategic Defence Review gets a lot right, but it means nothing unless it translates to action.
Industry needs demand signals to scale and innovate, and investment to back up commitments.

Today’s publication of the Defence Select Committee report into the High North highlights glaring capability gaps in defence.
With the withdrawal of HMS Protector last week, unlikely to go to sea again, and the scale of u fu def commitments in the Defence Investment Plan to be addressed in the budget next week, the Government must address its commitment to defence.
We’ve seen little of Wes Streeting as the new Defence Secretary, and when we do he trots out a succession of glib party political one-liners in the Commins, meanwhile capability withers and procurement continues to stall.

🚨EXCLUSIVE🚨This has been an incredibly long and painstaking piece of work, led by @GazTheJourno who spent months looking at maps, an ungodly number of digital tracking data websites and plotting where various Russian ships had been and how that corresponds to the network of undersea cables.
It’s also one of the last stories I played a part in during my time at @Telegraph.
