GOOD NEWS: President Biden has commuted 37 federal death sentences to life without parole.
The Vera Insitute of Justice applauds President Biden for this historic act of clemency—the most consequential step taken by any U.S. president to end the death penalty.
The death penalty is a deeply flawed and draconian relic of the United States legal system that many Americans, especially younger voters across the political spectrum, no longer support. It is prone to errors, perpetuates racial bias, and drains public resources while failing to deter crime or make our communities safer.
Ending mass incarceration requires that this country end its obsession with retribution over other forms of meaningful accountability.
In his final weeks in office, and with nearly 10,000 clemency applicants awaiting a decision, we urge the president to continue using his pardon powers to deliver safety, accountability, and justice. Read our full statement: vera.org/newsroom/vera-insti…

There are never just "special exemptions." The nature of sentencing laws. If the death penalty exists it'll be imposed and carried out predominately and disproportionately against poor, Black and Brown people.

Incarceration has a wide-reaching and long-lasting effect on families.
People with incarcerated immediate family members are less likely to report good physical and mental health and less likely to rate as “thriving” in terms of overall well-being.

Vote NO on Prop 36! The measure takes us back to the failed ‘tough on crime’ policies of the past. It turns some misdemeanors into felonies and will do nothing but supercharge the costly prison industrial complex. #NoProp36

As the Public Defender for @countyofla, I’ve seen the devastation caused by over-reliance on incarceration. It breaks families, deepens racial inequities, and sets people up to fail when they reenter society. And now we are at risk of losing the progress we’ve made from existing initiatives that provide treatment and housing. Prop36 perpetuates a vicious cycle of systemic racism instead of empowerment and care #VoteNOonProp36. #CareNotCages
