US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has proposed a new defense framework with ASEAN member states to strengthen regional cooperation and deter coercion and aggression.
Speaking at the US-ASEAN Defense Ministers Informal Meeting in Cebu, Hegseth said the framework would provide a practical guide for defense cooperation over the coming years.
Hegseth also highlighted the 50th anniversary of US-Southeast Asia relations in 2027, saying Washington remains committed to a stable, secure, and prosperous Indo-Pacific grounded in mutual respect, sovereignty, and stronger national defense capabilities.

A Polish engineering company has unveiled plans to construct a gigantic 207-meter (679-foot) statue of Jesus Christ in the northern Philippines, potentially creating the tallest statue of Jesus ever built and surpassing every existing statue in the world.
The monument, planned for Ilocos Sur province on the island of Luzon, would be more than five times the height of Rio de Janeiro's iconic Christ the Redeemer statue and 25 meters taller than India's 182-meter Statue of Unity.
Szczecin-based engineering firm Slipform has completed the conceptual design and submitted it to a Filipino investor following discussions surrounding Polish President Karol Nawrocki's visit to Manila.
Slipform CEO Daniel Kisała says the company could construct the monument's reinforced concrete supporting core in approximately 40 days using innovative Polish technology developed in 2023.
The enormous structure could require up to 27,000 cubic meters of concrete, with its supporting core measuring approximately 49 by 30 meters across.
