The Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) was the guerrilla army and founding military force of South Sudan, established in 1983 during the Second Sudanese Civil War.
The SPLA was formed in May 1983 after a mutiny by southern soldiers in Bor, Sudan; the late Dr. John Garang de Mabior led it. It fought a 21-year civil war against the central government in Khartoum to gain self-determination and rights for the people of southern Sudan.
The war ended with the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement in 2005, which led to an autonomous Southern Sudan and, ultimately, South Sudan's independence in 2011.
This is where i was inspired to name my book after the great army that bore my country. I am a child born out of this.
