The sad reality is that much that been written about the partition of India and its impact has been entirely about the partition of Punjab and West Pakistan. Very little has been written about partition of Bengal and the impact of emergence of East Pakistan. I am personally convinced on reading extant material that then PM Jawaharlal Nehru despised dark-skinned Hindu Bengalis and hence did nothing to help Hindu Bengali refugees. On the contrary, he kept instructing CM BC Roy to stop Hindu Bengali refugees from entering and seeking shelter in India. To force the West Bengal Govt's hand, Nehru imposed drastic cuts in funds for Bengal. Nehru even claimed Hindu Bengalis were coming to India because of 'free ration' which never quite existed in reality. Nehru declared Hindu Bengali refugees as 'Permanent Liability' and forced Roy to dump Hindu Bengali refugees like so much unwanted garbage in overcrowded, filthy camps which were called, after Hitler's concentration camps, PLCs -- PLC1, PLC2, PLC 3... etc. Nehru also forced Hindu Bengali refugees to be banished to Hindi-speaking arid lands like Dandakaranya and Andaman as a deterrent. Marichjhapi massacre was a Communist crime, but it was entirely inspired by the perverse thinking and twisted mindset of Nehru that had only hate for Hindu Bengali refugees. We must also never forget Nehru signed a shameful deal with Liaquat Ali Khan so that Hindu Bengalis could be abandoned at the mercy of their tormentors in East Bengal/East Pakistan and subsequently post-Mujeeb Bangladesh. CAA 2019 may not entirely undo the injustices of the past and ensure restitution, but only Hindu Bengali refugees who have suffered the dehumanisation, the debasement and the devastation of loss of their homesteads and 'desh', would know its true import. In this age when the personal is political, I must add that among those Hindu Bengali refugees so horribly treated by Nehru and punished for seeking shelter in India was my father, then a teenaged boy. For me, there can be nothing good ever done by Nehru. Nothing. You need to know this background why Hindu Bengali refugees are celebrating the notification of #CAA 2019 rules.
