Glad RCR are taking a proactive & robust approach to clinical standards regarding physician assistants
Thankful for leadership by @DrStephenHarden @DrDLittle & others on this matter
Hope this continues across issues of Radiology standards, training & NHS inferior substitutions
But they sound cool for political/DHSC public relations stories. Hence there's money for these initiatives.

Britain's taxes aren't unusually high - but they are freakishly complex, @TheEconomist says: economist.com/britain/2026/1…
Good thing thanks to Andy Burnham we're not "in hock" to the bond market anymore right?
NEW: The UK’s long-term borrowing costs have reached 6% for the first time in almost three decades
The yield on 30-year gilts rose five basis points to 6% this morning, a level last seen in March 1998

Every day there is some tidbit of UK news that an editor would remove from a novel about a country undergoing a rapid decline because it was too silly to be realistic
EXCL: Ministers are being lobbied by the chief executive of a major British business to solve the NEETs crisis – by imposing a four-day week on top earners.
The high-flying boss, who has close links to the Labour party, is convinced that forcing the best-paid employees to work fewer days could be the silver bullet for moving the one million youngsters not in employment, education or training into the jobs market.
The only legitimate functions of the state: courts, policing, national defence and the opera.

Never been to the opera before?
Now’s your chance. We’re giving away 70,000 free tickets to the @MetOpera at the iconic Lincoln Center. Go to on.nyc.gov/opera to enter the lottery. There’s not a bad seat in the house.

The extent of the PISA gap between England + other western European countries is extraordinary.
In reading, the 25% most disadvantaged pupils in England outperformed the average for *all* students in Germany, France, the Netherlands, Norway etc...
A decade ago there was no gap
New post out:
England's schools are now the second highest performing in the world outside the far east, according to the PISA study.
Is this because of policy? Attitude to technology? Cultural factors like immigration? And where can we still improve?

NEW
Bank of England hold interest rates with a 6-3 vote.
Says q3 growth will now be 0.4%
- in a surprise move the Bank’s auctions of Government debt (amassed for QE) are paused, and the Bank has decided to hold on to its stock of long term debts, partly to back up total banknote issuance.
It has proposed to Chancellor to sell its gilts directly back to Government/ DMO at market price (rather than auctions)
Wouldn't it be far more sensible to just disestablish the Church of England?
This is nonsense.
Why should a person of another religion or denomination decide on internal management and ecclesiastical promotion for Anglican Christians and their church?

It’s pretty depressing to have two parties who say they’re committed to growth, but one raises tax in a way that damages growth, and the other refuses to cut tax in a way that boosts growth.

But trust the current UK Labour government to decide that good educational standards & outcomes in England are a problem we should emulate the failures and decline of Wales and Scotland instead.
Replying to @jburnmurdoch
2) England is a rare exception.
During the 2010s many other countries (including the other 3 UK nations) changed tack, experimenting with ideas like transferrable skills instead of focusing on tried-and-tested disciplines and methods. It looks like those experiments have failed.
True.
The UK is the poorest country in northern Europe. Have to go to the Mediterranean PIGS or former Communist eastern bloc for lower per capita income (many of whom are due to overtake us in the next 5 years too because they actually want economic growth & development).
Exclusive:
Britain is “poorer than we often think” and cannot rely on higher public spending as a route to making the country “great again”, a former minister has said
Darren Jones, the former chief secretary to the prime minister under Sir Keir Starmer, said that higher public spending alone would not lead to economic growth
Writing for The Times, he said: “Britain is poorer than we often think. We won’t get richer based on higher public spending alone, and we can’t tax billionaires who don’t live here
“We shouldn’t rely on public spending as a route to some romantic version of making Britain great again as we look in the rearview mirror for a great history that is no longer available to us. We must face the future, and I know my colleagues are up to the challenge.”
He said Burnham’s ten-year plan, which is expected to be published in November, must “rise to these challenges, or the sugar rush of short-term announcements will be meaningless in the face of the populist backlash that will follow”
