“Ryan was a good player. That was never the debate. He could take the ball, turn, and carry us up the pitch. Everybody could see the quality.
But at Liverpool, midfield is not only about what you do with the ball. You have to defend. You have to close the spaces, win the first contact, and protect the centre-backs. That part was not consistent enough with Ryan.
That is why Endo played so often when I was Liverpool manager. Endo gave us security. He was in the right position, he was aggressive, he did the dirty work. When the game became chaotic, I trusted him.
Ryan had the talent to get there. But if I needed control without the ball, I went with Endo. That was not a punishment. That was what the team needed
