Erich Ludendorff (a senior German general and First Quartermaster General, effectively co-director of Germany’s war effort with Hindenburg) played a key role in facilitating the return of Vladimir Lenin and other Bolsheviks to Russia in 1917, as a deliberate wartime measure to destabilize Russia and force it out of World War I. After the February Revolution overthrew the Tsar, the Provisional Government continued fighting on the side of the Allies. Germany wanted to knock Russia out of the war to free troops for the Western Front. Intermediaries (notably Alexander Parvus/Helphand, a Marxist revolutionary working with German intelligence) proposed sending Lenin and fellow exiles from Switzerland through German territory. Ludendorff agreed to this in late March 1917. The result was the famous “sealed train” (plombierten Waggon). In early April 1917, Lenin, Grigory Zinoviev, Karl Radek, and roughly 30 others traveled from Zurich through Germany under strict conditions (extraterritoriality, no inspections or stops for contact with outsiders) to Sweden and then Finland, arriving in Petrograd (St. Petersburg) on April 16. The German High Command (including Ludendorff) approved and enabled the transit. Germany also provided substantial financial support for anti-war/revolutionary propaganda and related activities aimed at undermining the Russian war effort, with Parvus and others as conduits (exact amounts and direct links to the Bolshevik party remain debated among historians, but the support is documented in German records). Ludendorff’s own later assessment (from his memoirs) was blunt and instrumental: sending Lenin assumed “a great responsibility,” but “from a military point of view his journey was justified, for Russia had to be laid low.” He and others in the German command viewed the Bolsheviks as a usable weapon against the enemy—comparable to shells or poison gas—rather than as ideological allies. The expectation was short-term chaos and a separate peace; longer-term consequences were secondary or underestimated. Lenin, for his part, exploited the opportunity while pursuing his own revolutionary goals (mutual cynicism was later noted by figures like Trotsky). The gamble succeeded in its immediate aims. Lenin’s return strengthened the Bolsheviks, who seized power in the October Revolution. Russia signed the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk (March 1918) under harsh German terms and exited the war, allowing Germany to shift forces westward. This was a major strategic success for the German military leadership, even though it proved insufficient to win the overall war. After Germany’s defeat, Ludendorff became a vocal opponent of Bolshevism. In short, Ludendorff’s role was that of a high-level military decision-maker who authorized the transit and broader subversive efforts against Russia as a calculated wartime tactic. It was not primarily about spreading Bolshevism as an end in itself, but about using the Bolsheviks’ anti-war stance to destroy Russia’s ability to fight. Mainstream historical accounts treat the 1917 assistance (sealed train plus related support) as well-established; more extreme claims of a deep, long-running personal collusion between Lenin and Ludendorff going back to 1905 are outside the scholarly consensus.
