Freelancing has many benefits for disabled people, you can work from the comfort of your own home, choose your hours and more. However, as the Disabled Journalist Network shares in this thread, that doesn’t mean freelancing is easy! #NationalFreelancersDay #DisabledPrideMonth
When we talk about the difficulties of journalism, a lot of people focus on the workplace and/or getting a place there! Freelancing is a great alternative for most disabled people. But that doesn't mean freelancing is easy... 🧵

URGENT. CALL TO ACTION. Calling all disabled people and our allies to be ready for the fight of our ‘rail travelling’ lives ❗️This flies in the face of supporting sustainable, accessible travel. It is discriminatory & excluding. IT MUST NOT SUCEED ‼️
🚨 BREAKING: Sources confirm that @Mark_J_Harper has just "pressed go" on the plans. Train operators will announce consultations tomorrow on 1,000 ticket offices up for closure. We understand that: "Ministers want ticket offices closed by Christmas."

Given the size and scale of the ticket office closures, with such profound impacts on disabled people, it is staggering that disabled people and our orgs have not had the opportunity to influence this policy at a National level. (1/4)

Many first-time wheelchair users receive little or no training on how to use their wheelchair properly. Could you speak to the BBC about your recent experience starting to use a wheelchair and the support (or lack of) that you got? Message us if so. Filming 5th July in London.

I need EVERYONE to realize that DISABLED people are THREE TIMES more likely to be assaulted THREE TIMES This “act deaf” “act blind” “act crazy” or whatever tf Tyra Banks said 30 years ago was always harmful, dangerous and statistically incorrect

🐝 Accessibility hive mind 🐝 Anyone know if there is anything that will help if you get headaches or migraines from playing video games? ❤️ Got asked to make a vid about it, but not sure where to start reading up on the subject ✨ #a11y

hugely disappointing to see the person attributed with first coining “neurodiversity” sharing such hateful and transphobic messages. you can not be an advocate for one marginalised community without supporting and advocating for ALL marginalised people.

I have 2 conditions that affect thermoregulation. 20 degrees is my upper limit. So I use aircon. Disabled and chronically ill people need to be included in convos about climate, unless people just want us to be in A&E, or go away. #ecoableism #ClimateCrisis #DisabilityTwitter

🗞️It's a week since the @Telegraph published a calculator allowing you to see the proportion of your taxes funding the welfare state. It's part of a nasty rhetoric re-emerging in our media. Disabled people, in particular those unable to work, are painted as scroungers. 🧵 1/7

Recently, I pitched a story about the very weird tradition of competitive worm charming. This was a bit of a tumbleweed pitch — mostly silence from editors and a few bemused rejections. (1/8) 🪱

In the most personal piece yet, I explored what it means to be in a body getting sicker, the ableism that comes with it and how your identity changes when you ask yourself; Am I disabled?

If you are disabled and attending the #eurovision2023 village be prepared for a long queue with NO accessible entrance. Staff told me there is only one queue and it is very long with no areas to sit down. #disabilitytwitter

Donating hearing aids is great because costs are inaccessible. We’ve been over this. Framing your video like they’re an instant cure without showcasing what can occur after with the journey & letting people believe they’re the end all be all & not addressing ableism is another.

I am not less-abled. I am not alternatively-abled. I am not differently-abled. I am not uniquely-abled. Stop trying to come up with cutesy ways to avoid saying the word disabled like you're trying to curse around a two-year-old. I am disabled. Say the word. It's not a bad word

SEND I was recently challenged on the use of the term 'Special Needs' so I'd love to open the discussion about whether this term is okay or outdated... It's deeply embedded within our sector (but that doesn't mean it's okay) Please share your thoughts in thread & RT
