The biggest critics of self directed education have literally no idea what it is. It’s hilarious to hear their theories about it.
"Self-directed learning" is a privilege confined to very few students who have a specific set of knowledge, skills and expertise. In that sense it's about as far away from an "inclusive" education as you can get.

There's a contradiction at the heart of how we educate our children. We take away their autonomy when we tell them that learning means doing what we tell them. We take away their purpose when we teach them skills out of context 'which will be important later on'. 1/

Favourite Myths: "Self-Directed Education has been conclusively shown not to work". I'm told this often, usually by male teachers. When I ask more questions or provide evidence to the contrary they stop responding or block me. So let's see if it's an evidence-based claim. 1/

Interesting example of how a more self-directed approach to education gets covered in the press - the focus of the article is on curiosity and helping kids find what they love, the title is ‘school with no rules’. 1/ thetimes.co.uk/article/would…

Nervous to present this topic to educators. Using words like coercion, consent, schoolishness in a room full of schools… 😬BUT I know learning those things changed my life & I hope that’s the case for others!

“Everyone is annoyed by ‘mansplaining’..but too often we presume that it is our job to enlighten [children] from our special store of wisdom and experience. If it’s belittling to do this to adults, isn’t it also belittling to children?” teachertomsblog.blogspot.com…

The same should be for young people and their education. Maybe it's not the students who are failing, but rather the system. Do you agree/disagree? #unschooling #selfdirectededucation #selfdirectedlearning #teachers #LearntOut #teacherssupportteachers
Stress at work is a very real problem for many #teachers. In a study conducted in the UK, 65% of the teachers who responded identified signs of #burnout in their jobs. 85% were diagnosed as working "unsustainably". When will #relationships and people be prioritised over #results?

It is strange how many seem to believe that if we didn’t send children to school, they will remain in early childhood forever, playing, running around and exploring. 1/

I consider the basics to be the skills children need to manage life and learning, rather than academic context. Problem-solving, emotional regulation, knowing yourself and how you work - none of these things are well learnt by being told what to do in a classroom.

My latest article in Tipping Points is for anyone who has ever tried to explain self-directed education to others - or for those who just can’t imagine how children can learn without school. ⁦@alliance4sde⁩ ⁦@ProgEducat⁩ ⁦@SuitableEd⁩ self-directed.org/tp/lord-of…
