Racism requires for its perpetrators to separate the human from the body, or dehumanization. It has internal effects & the thing is, it's killing us all. It is murdering many of us and rotting White America.

I want to address white people who built successful careers off of "studying" Black, Latinx, and/or Indigenous communities: have you offered space/training opportunities/mentoring/tangible resources to members of the community whose suffering you benefit from? If not, why not?

Whew Chile... this "catch the students up" energy is not it. Catch them up to what? Some arbitrary standards that multi million dollar companies created to make educators and students feel insufficient because they make more money when they sell school systems on a fix?

Books with queer content aren't inappropriate or pornographic. They're books. Books belong in classroom and school libraries. If a parent does not want his/her/their child to read a book, fine. But that parent has no right -- no right -- to say other kids cannot read those books.

Also, censorship is, obviously, a whole different issue, but I’m all for updating and critically analyzing books we have our students read. If you’re interested at all about this conversation happening in K-12, you should check out @DisruptTexts — they do incredible work!

This idea of not wanting students to read books that may be upsetting is so unsettling. We should read books that challenge us, upset us, and push us in our thinking. Once we start reading only texts we agree with or make us feel good, we are entering dangerous territory. – at Atlanta, GA

As we've said before: we teach young people, NOT books. If you're more concerned about the books you teach and not meeting the needs of the young people before you, you're off. The books are tools. Ask: what is the best tool I can use to meet the need they have? #DisrupTexts

“...Literacy is liberation...By developing students’ literacy skills, we support their ability to critically read & navigate a democratic society...students must develop empathy & an understanding of a diversity of experiences.”
Thank you #DisruptTexts for all you do!
The response to #DisruptTexts has been overwhelmingly positive. That said, our work has also been met with pushback. We are open to critical & productive conversations, but we find it necessary to address some common, perhaps willful, misconceptions.
