Designing a new BI tool, or want to improve the UX of your existing BI tool? Here's how you need to think about updates.
Blog post describing @DixinTang's transaction panorama paper, to be presented today (Tues) at 10.30AM @VLDBconf. Come find us after!

Thrilled to share that I'll join the CS Department at @UTAustin as an Assistant Professor in the upcoming academic year! Immense gratitude to my Ph.D. and Postdoc advisors @AaronJElmore and @adityagp, as well as everyone who has helped and supported me on this journey.
Thanks for having me! I thoroughly enjoyed my visit @sigmacomputing
Thanks to @DixinTang @Berkeley_EECS for visiting us at our SF HQ @sigmacomputing and sharing his work on empowering general audiences for large-scale interactive data analysis!
Check out our transactional panorama paper in VLDB’23, co-authored with @indygupta, Alan Fekete, and @adityagp 🧵
Vol:16 No:6 → Transactional Panorama: A Conceptual Framework for User Perception in Analytical Visual Interfaces vldb.org/pvldb/vol16/p1494-t…
Technically, transactional panorama considers the user-related semantics in visual data analytics and extends database transactions in several ways, such as modeling a user’s “looking at the screen” behavior as transactions and defining a new isolation level.
This paper is inspired by the DIEL project (dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/29395…) led by @yifanwu, @joe_hellerstein, and @sirrice, a seminal project that brings transactions to end-user analytics.
Excited to participate in ICDE next week. I will present “Efficient and Compact Spreadsheet Formula Graphs” in Research Session 3 (Tuesday, 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm). 🧵
We identify and exploit a novel property in spreadsheets, tabular locality, to compress spreadsheet formula graphs (i.e., the graph for tracking how one formula depends on others) and reduce the response time for querying the graphs (e.g., finding dependent formulas for a cell).
More interestingly, this compact representation can be easily visualized to manifest the hidden patterns in spreadsheet formulas. Please check out the preprint here people.eecs.berkeley.edu/~to… and the demo (done by @FanchaoChen) here youtu.be/qxZWVJ7THjw.

Want to work on something forward-looking? I’m hiring a Research Software Engineer to work on the future of cloud programming. Experience with DBs, Distributed Sys, Rust, compilers all a plus. Must be local SFBay. Berkeley Hydro project bit.ly/hydrocidr21. DM me!
Proud to be part of EPIC Data Lab!
A @UCBerkeley lab is building data tools that allow people without programming backgrounds to benefit from the latest computer science advances.
"These tools are the missing link between these teams and the insights that they need," @sarahchasins said.
