Lottocracy is all the rage among political philosophers, but itβs natural to be uneasy about an untried system. Advocates cite successful real-world mini-publics as evidence. How much confidence should these give us? I examine this in my latest paper:

I like AirBnb when I travel with my fam β itβs always tough keeping the three of us in one room for more than a few days.
But if Iβm going to pay your monthβs mortgage with a 4-day stay, then also pay a cleaning fee, Iβve got zero sympathy for you having to take out the trash.

AI is a jobs program for philosophers.
Exactly. The military industry line is a myth created by people who clearly do not understand even the basics of game theory.

Whatβs unusual in this chart is not the drop in the number of dissertations after 2020, but the surge starting in the 1990s.
The current drop simply brings them back to the pre-1990s normal.
There was never such a soaring need for those PhDs.
If it survives legal challenges. Big if.

Crucially, moving to another state doesnβt allow one to avoid the tax, since the tax would be owed by billionaires who lived in California at the beginning of 2026.
Not 2027 β but beginning of 2026.
There is no incentive to move to another state. One cannot avoid the tax by moving. This is one of the main reasons why it was structured as a one-time tax.
I've got a couple pieces arguing that even best case scenario (a) AI and robots likely won't solve the debt crisis, and (b) even if it could perfectly read your mind, it still couldn't know everything about you because some of the info doesn't exist yet (like with markets).

Terrific new essay at the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy on Academic Freedom, by Jacob Levy.

I'm watching Halt and Catch Fire and I'm amazed at the parallels between the rise of the personal computer in the late 80s and AI today.
