The Man Who Bought Back the Public Square
Dan | Restore Britain
Some people talk about free speech. Elon Musk spent $44 billion defending it.
When Musk bought Twitter in October 2022, the platform was shutting down debate. Accounts were banned for saying things that later turned out to be true, and posts were quietly hidden by moderators nobody elected. Ordinary people learned to keep their heads down.
Musk changed that. He restored banned accounts and told the world that everyone, left and right, should be free to speak within the law. Then he opened the books. The Twitter Files showed how the old Twitter had worked with officials and pressure groups to suppress posts and stories. What critics had called a conspiracy theory turned out to be on the record.
He brought in Community Notes, where ordinary users rather than a censorship team add context to misleading posts, and they correct politicians and journalists as readily as anyone else. That's what free speech looks like: answer bad arguments with better ones, not with a ban.
Ask yourself where the Rotherham survivors, the grooming gang campaigners and the people questioning small boats and two-tier policing would get heard without X. Much of the mainstream media ignored them for years. X gave them a microphone, and Musk made sure it stayed switched on.
The establishment has never forgiven him for it. He's been attacked by politicians, threatened with regulation and boycotted by advertisers. He took the hits and kept going.
Musk's achievements go beyond X. Starlink has kept people connected in war zones and disaster areas. SpaceX brought rocket launches back to the West, and Tesla pushed the whole car industry forward. Still, his greatest gift to democracy may be the simplest one: he gave ordinary people their voice back.
In January 2025 he was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for his support of free speech. Whatever any committee decides, millions of people already know what he did.
Thank you, Elon.

Elon Musk bought Twitter in 2022, and that's the only reason you're even aware that France is a warzone tonight.
Legacy media describes it as "scuffles" and "cost of living protests".
They're lying to everyone's faces.
You and I are the media now.
