Recovering from Purity Culture is now available!
My greatest hope for this book is that you will see that you don’t have to walk away from your faith or your values about sex in order to heal from purity culture.

When deconstructing purity culture, many people find themselves leaving faith altogether. But according to @DoctorCamden, that doesn’t have to be the case.

Let’s find the path forward
We know what is wrong with purity culture—now we need to know how to heal. Drawing on historical and psychological research, my own personal experience, and therapy case studies, my book tackles what comes next when it comes to reclaiming our sexuality from harmful teachings.

The myths of purity culture cannot be “turned off” in the mind because the trauma of those beliefs is stored in the body." - @DoctorCamden

5 stars for “The Exvangelicals” by @sarahmccammon.
From my review: “This book explains why ‘about one-third of Americans raised in evangelical households leave the tradition as adults’. We should all pay attention.”

When someone tells you to “just choose to not be affected by purity culture any more”, they are misunderstanding how trauma affects the body.
It’s not enough to just change your beliefs or cognitively know what’s myth and what’s truth.
The body has to get on the same page.

I'm fascinated by Madison Prewett Troutt's rebranding of purity culture as "female empowerment."
ALL of the purity culture myths are evident in her quotes here and in recent podcast interviews she's done.
This is purity culture 2.0

Shannon Harris’s new memoir “The Woman They Wanted” brings her voice into the story of “I Kissed Dating Goodbye.”
It also brings in an entirely different gospel.

"Writing a book, making a movie, creating art, and then releasing it into the world for the world to do its worst and best and every iteration in between is absolutely terrifying. But you are not alone.”

"Where the biblical script can turn toxic is when Christian communities give cover to men who appear to be or present themselves as godly while causing great harm, or when passages about male headship are made into an ideology of hierarchy and domination."
"Pearcey’s treatment of masculinity weaves together many theological, sociological, exegetical, and historical threads. And while the scope and ambition of the project is impressive, the results are mixed."
