In December 1960 the most famous writer in the world was checked into the Mayo Clinic under his own doctor's name, officially for his blood pressure, and given up to fifteen rounds of electric shock to the brain, and when he came out he could no longer write a sentence, and six months later he was dead.
Ernest Hemingway was 61. He had the Nobel Prize, the Pulitzer, the houses in Cuba and Idaho, and a head that had been battered more times than anyone could count. He had been blown up by a mortar in Italy in 1918, split his skull open in a London car crash in 1944, been thrown from a motorcycle by a shell in France the same year, and walked away from two plane crashes in Africa on consecutive days in 1954, the second leaving fluid leaking from his skull. He drank enormously. By 1960 he was paranoid, convinced the FBI was following him, unable to finish the Paris memoir he had nearly completed.
The Mayo psychiatrist, Howard Rome, treated it as depression and gave him the treatment of the day. Electroconvulsive therapy was the modern answer in 1960, quicker than analysis and tidier than the lobotomy it had replaced. Hemingway went home to Ketchum in January.
He was worse. Asked to write a single line for a presentation volume for the new President Kennedy, he sat at his desk for a week, could not do it, and wept that it just won't come anymore. In April his wife Mary found him in a state that terrified her, and he was flown back to Rochester for another course of shocks.
At the Mayo he told his friend A.E. Hotchner what the treatment had done. His memory was his capital, he said, the thing his whole trade was built on, and they had wiped it and put him out of business. "It was a brilliant cure but we lost the patient."
The clinic discharged him at the end of June as improved. On the morning of 2 July 1961, at home in Ketchum, he took his own life.
The psychiatrist who has studied his head injuries most closely, Andrew Farah, argues that the man in Rome's office was not simply depressed but living in a brain wrecked by a lifetime of concussions and drink, and that electricity was the last thing it needed. The FBI files released in the 1980s showed he really had been watched for years, which is a hard way to learn that a patient's paranoia was partly a report.
None of that got a hearing in 1960. The diagnosis was in the textbook, the treatment was in the textbook, and the patient's complaint that it was taking his mind was in the textbook too, listed as a side effect, expected and temporary.
They treated the most observant man in American letters for being wrong about what he was seeing, and the last thing he saw clearly was what they had done to him.

Let me tell you something absolutely BONKERS from last night’s midterms…
Democrat Ericka Lomick just “won” Texas House District 93 despite being a convicted felon who suspended her campaign months ago.
She pleaded guilty in 2011 to federal charges including mortgage-fraud conspiracy, bank fraud, and money laundering. Her sentence? 63 months in federal prison.
On her candidate paperwork, she checked the box claiming she had not been finally convicted of a felony. After her criminal record surfaced in September, she suspended her campaign and stopped running.
But Texas election deadlines had already passed, so her name remained on the ballot for both the regular general election and the special election.
And voters still elected her by roughly 51–49%.
Here’s the kicker: Under Texas law, a final felony conviction generally makes someone ineligible to hold office unless they’ve been pardoned or had their disabilities released.
Meaning she can’t actually serve. Her “victory” simply creates a vacancy and triggers yet another special election.
A convicted federal fraudster who quit campaigning still got elected to the Texas House.

Canadian police spent the 1950s and 60s shooting the sled dogs of the Inuit, and a people who had fed themselves off the sea ice for a thousand years ended up queuing at a government store.
An Inuit family's dog team was its truck, its tractor and its larder. The dogs pulled the sled out to the seal holes and the caribou grounds and brought the meat home. They could smell a seal's breathing hole under the snow before the hunter could see it. A family without dogs could not reach the animals that fed it.
The government wanted the Inuit in settlements, where they could be counted, schooled and housed. Parents were told the family allowance would stop if the children were not in school. And across the Arctic, Mounties and other officials shot the dogs, often in front of their owners. Between 1950 and 1975 the number of Inuit sled dogs fell from more than 10,000 to fewer than 1,000.
In 2006 the RCMP investigated itself and concluded it had only been protecting public safety. A judge's inquiry in Quebec found the dogs had been killed to force the Inuit into the settlements. In November 2024 the Canadian government apologised to the Inuit of northern Quebec, conceded that the killings had left families hungry and cut off from the land, and paid C$45 million.
The settlements had a store, and the store sold flour, sugar, lard and tea. Nunavut now has the highest rate of household food insecurity in Canada.
Nobody ever passed a law telling an Inuk he could not hunt. They shot his dogs, put his children in a school and opened a shop, and let the rest follow.
It is never the hunting they ban. It is whatever the hunting depends on.

Rachel Carson wrote Silent Spring with breast cancer eating through her, hid it from everyone but her closest friends so the chemical industry could not use it against the book, and testified to the Senate in a wig because the radiation had taken her hair.
She was a government biologist who wrote pamphlets about fish for the Fish and Wildlife Service and sat up at night writing about the sea. Her first book came out a few weeks before Pearl Harbor and sold almost nothing. Her second, in 1951, sat on the bestseller list for 86 weeks and bought her out of the civil service. She never married. She buried her father, her sister and then her mother, and at 50 she adopted her orphaned great-nephew, Roger, aged five, and raised him alone.
In 1958 a friend wrote to her about the birds dropping dead in her garden after the mosquito spraying. Carson had been collecting the evidence on DDT since 1945, when the magazines turned her down. She started the book that winter.
In the spring of 1960, with the manuscript half written, the surgeon took her left breast off and told her it was benign. It was not. The tumour had spread, and she found out months later, from another doctor, that the first one had decided not to tell her. She wrote the rest of Silent Spring between radiation sessions, through nausea and a crumbling spine, with her hair falling out and an arthritic grip on the pen, and she told almost nobody. If the industry learned the author had cancer, the book would be read as a dying woman's grievance rather than a case.
The book came out in September 1962. The industry spent an estimated quarter of a million dollars answering it. Velsicol, which made two of the pesticides she named, wrote to her publisher threatening to sue and suggesting sinister influences wanted American farming reduced to Soviet levels. Monsanto printed a parody called The Desolate Year, in which the insects inherit the earth, and sent out 5,000 copies. A former Secretary of Agriculture, Ezra Taft Benson, was reported to have asked why a spinster with no children was so worried about genetics, and to have concluded she was probably a communist.
In April 1963 she went on CBS to face the industry's man, Robert White-Stevens of American Cyanamid, who told 10 million viewers that if mankind followed Miss Carson it would return to the Dark Ages. Two of the programme's sponsors had pulled out. Carson, upright in a wig, quietly took him apart. A month later President Kennedy's own science advisers reported that she had been right.
In June she sat before a Senate committee, barely able to walk to the chair, and the chairman greeted her with the line Lincoln is supposed to have given Harriet Beecher Stowe. "Miss Carson, you are the lady who started all this."
She died on 14 April 1964, aged 56, of the cancer she had hidden for four years so that it could not be used to discredit her work. America banned DDT in 1972.
In 2015 the daughters of the women sprayed in her lifetime turned out to carry 3.7 times the breast cancer risk when their mothers had carried the most DDT. Rachel Carson spent her last four years proving the chemical killed birds, and died of the disease it would later be found to have passed down through the daughters of the women who stood in the fog.
The industry called her hysterical. She never once mentioned her own body in the argument. She did not need to.

The ribeye is £42 on the menu. It cost the kitchen about £14 to put on the plate.
The pasta is £18. It cost about £2.50, most of which was the parmesan.
The salad is £14. It cost about £2, and the lettuce was the expensive bit.
The risotto is £19. It is rice, stock and a knob of butter, and the stock was free.
The steak returns twice what it cost. The pasta returns six times. The salad returns six times.
So the chef's special is the pasta, the salad gets a paragraph on the menu, and the steak sits at the bottom with no adjectives.
Now scale the restaurant up to a country.
A box of cereal is 20p of grain and £3.50 on the shelf.
A plant-based burger is pea flour, rapeseed oil and a red dye, and it sells for more than the beef one it is pretending to be.
An oat drink is oats and water and sells at twice the price of the milk it replaced.
Every tier of the trade makes its margin on the plant, because a plant is nearly free and an animal takes two years of grass.

At 13 Judy Garland signed with MGM, and the studio decided she was too fat, put her on chicken soup, black coffee and cigarettes, and handed her pills to keep her going and more pills to knock her out, and by the time she finished The Wizard of Oz she was hooked on both.
She had been on stage since she was two, as Frances Gumm, the youngest of the Gumm Sisters. Her mother, Ethel, managed her, and according to her biographer first gave her pills, for energy and for sleep, before she was ten. Judy later called her mother the real Wicked Witch of the West.
MGM signed her in 1935. Louis B. Mayer and the studio bosses reportedly called her a fat little pig with pigtails. Mayer insisted on the diet himself: chicken soup, black coffee and cigarettes, with pills to take her appetite away. The studio supplied the pep pills, and when they left her too wired to sleep after the long days on set, it supplied sleeping pills for that. She and Mickey Rooney, she said later, were worked "days and nights on end", once for 72 hours straight, and kept going on pills.
She was 16 when filming began on The Wizard of Oz, and by the time it ended she was addicted to amphetamines and barbiturates. The girl in the gingham dress singing about somewhere over the rainbow was being starved by the studio and dosed by it.
The rest of her life was pills, husbands, comebacks and collapses. "At times," she said, "I have been pretty much of a walking advertisement for sleeping pills." She died in London on 22 June 1969, aged 47, of an accidental overdose of barbiturates.
At MGM a growing girl's hunger was treated as the problem, and the studio had a chemical for it.
Hollywood has never stopped thinking that way. It has only changed the delivery, from a bottle of pills to a weekly injection.

1941: Two chemists in a Lancashire calico works invent Terylene. The future of clothing, they say. It is a plastic bottle in the shape of a shirt.
1951: DuPont launches Dacron in America. Wash and wear, never needs ironing. It also never breathes, which America discovers in July.
1960s: Crimplene. A suit that never creases and can be heard approaching. Static electricity joins the British dance floor.
1973: Children's polyester pyjamas go up like paper, so they are soaked in a flame retardant called Tris.
1977: Tris is banned for causing cancer. The treated pyjamas are shipped abroad and sold to other people's children.
1979: A Manchester Woolworths burns. Ten dead. Foam and polyester furniture turns a room that used to take seventeen minutes to burn into one that takes three.
1982: HMS Sheffield. Sailors in synthetic uniforms are treated for the fabric melted into their skin. The Navy goes back to cotton and wool.
1993: Fleece is relaunched as the eco fabric, made from recycled bottles. The jumper is now proud of being a bottle.
2006: The US Marines ban polyester shirts in Iraq, because a burning man teaches faster than a brochure.
2016: Scientists put a fleece through a washing machine and count what comes out. Seven hundred thousand fibres, one wash, into the sea.
2020: Polyester fibres found in the human placenta.
2022: Found in human blood and deep in living lungs.
2024: Found in every testicle sampled, and in the plaque of arteries.
2025: Found in the brain. About a spoonful.
2026: Still "the future of clothing". Still melting, still smelling after one wear, still shedding, still sold on the hanger next to a sheep that solved all of it before the pyramids.
Eighty-five years of upgrades, and the only fabric in the shop that has never needed a recall is the one standing in a field.

Nine in ten American strawberries come from a few valleys in California where the soil is killed with a First World War gas before every planting, and the fields are visible from the road because they are wrapped in plastic to keep the gas in.
Chloropicrin was made for the trenches. It was a lung and eye agent, a vomiting gas, fired in shells to force men out of their masks. Now it is injected into the ground at Watsonville and Oxnard every year, under tarps that hold the fumes down for a week, and it does to the soil what it did to a trench: everything in it dies, the fungi, the bacteria, the worms, the insects, until the dirt is as sterile as a hospital tray. Then the strawberries go in, on raised beds of plastic, fed by drip line with everything a living soil would have given them, and the plastic and the gas go in again next year, because a dead soil has no defence against the one disease that gets through.
For forty years the gas was methyl bromide, which eats the ozone layer, and when the world banned it in 2005 California's strawberry growers got themselves an exemption and kept using it for another decade, the last major crop on earth to do so. Chloropicrin was the replacement, and the state's own pesticide regulator lists it among the commonest causes of farmworker poisoning in California. The men who apply it are mostly undocumented, the drift has emptied a school in Monterey County, and the strawberry has topped the list of the most pesticide-contaminated produce in America for most of the last decade.
Every year the industry calls it a heart-healthy antioxidant superfood, and every year the field it came from is gassed.
The cow in the pasture next door has never once needed the soil under her sterilised. The strawberry cannot be grown at that scale without it, and the war gas is the price of a punnet in January.

Vet: Morning. I'm here to vaccinate the whole herd.

Farmer: Bill Gates is worried about my cows.
Vet: He's worried about everybody's cows. He's not keen on the beef either.
Farmer: They've been burping on this land since before it had a name, and nobody ever needed a jab for it. Not my father's cows, not his father's. What's changed?
