“The city seen from the Queensboro Bridge is always the city seen for the first time.” An archivist at the Seamen's Church Institute tells me that Scott would probably have had an uninterrupted view of the Green Light Tower as he passed along the bridge from Great Neck via Queens
Just fell asleep on the train, standing up, with luggage rack frame as pillow. Think I must be tired…

‘I was invited to make a piece of work about the First World War. I had always wanted to go to the poppy factory in Richmond, London. Artificial poppies have been made there since 1922. When I visited the factory, I saw this machine that had rolls of red paper with perforations where the poppies had been punched out.
The fact that the poppies are absent is poignant, because obviously a lot of people didn’t come back from the First World War, and other wars since. In the artwork there’s something like 300,000 holes, and there’s many more lives lost than that.' - Cornelia Parker

In Oct 2018 I was on a research trip to Vincennes in Paris. They’d just opened an exhibition for the end of the #FWW centenary which included their signed copy of the armistice agreement from 11th Nov 1918. I never imagined I’d ever see it & found it strangely emotional.
Strange experience getting off the plane at Heathrow and immediately hearing the Last Post and everyone rushing to passport control suddenly stopping in their tracks. Never seen the Two Minutes’ Silence in an airport before.

As New York City’s backyard, Central Park is here to provide peaceful relaxation and a respite from city life, for all to enjoy. So, take a deep breath, and decompress with 40 seconds of zen in Central Park. 🌀
I’ll be both supporting women’s reproductive rights in the US today (obviously I can’t vote) and sending money to UNRWA.

The Museum of the City of New York has an awesome new exhibition on Shirley Chisholm, the first Black woman in Congress and first to run for President. She’d be 100 this year. I’m a trained guide at the museum so don’t hesitate to reach out if you’d like a tour. It’s very timely!

Something to ponder as you head out to vote today, for free. In the Library's Rosa Parks Papers collection, there's a receipt for the poll tax she had to pay to vote in Alabama in 1956. Poll taxes, a Jim Crow-era voter suppression tool, were not abolished federally until 1964.

Children & their education are not featured in any discussions when “experts “ or politicians talk about replacing @UNRWA .
Why?
Because in the absence of a functioning state, there is no alternative.
Until October last year, @UNRWA provided learning to over 300,000 boys & girls in #Gaza, making half of the school children cohort.
They are now losing a second year of education.
In the #WestBank, nearly 50,000 children go to our schools.
UNRWA is the only UN agency that directly provides education in UN schools.
Our schools are the only education system in the region that includes a Human Rights programme and that follows United Nations standards and values.
Dismantling UNRWA in the absence of a viable alternative will deprive Palestinian children of learning in the foreseeable future.
Without learning, children slip into hopelesness, poverty & radicalization.
Without learning, children fall prey into exploitation including joining armed groups.
Without learning, this region will remain unstable & volatile.
Without UNRWA, the fate of millions of people will hang by the thread.
Instead of focusing on banning UNRWA or finding alternatives, the focus should be on reaching an agreement to end this conflict.
This is the only way to prioritize the return to school for hundreds of thousands of children, currently living in the rubble.
It’s time to prioritize children and their future.
It might be November, but I am finally getting some proper pumpkin flavoured coffee. Better late than never.
