Our new study is just published! We identified an association in >300 people, then followed up in mice and cells. Our findings point to a new potential hormonal cascade whereby high salt intake increases cortisol, which may suppress FGF23.

Klotho, the "longevity protein," has long been a black box — we knew kidneys produced it, but not how it worked. #CityUHK Professor Ganesh Pathare, in collaboration with Professor Johannes Loffing, from the University of Zurich, have finally mapped its precise kidney functions - cracking the code! 🔑
Two game-changing discoveries:
🌟 Distal tubule Klotho → regulates calcium & bone health
🌟 Proximal tubule Klotho → maintains phosphate & circulating sKlotho levels
Overturning long-held assumptions, this study opens new doors for treating chronic kidney disease! 🩺

Limitation / open question:
How exactly proximal and distal nephron segments secrete sKlotho into blood vs urine is still unclear.
And importantly- what is urinary sKlotho actually doing? Biomarker only, or local tubular function?
Definitely an area for future work.
