“It worked, boom.” That’s Nigel Farage celebrating a Reform UK plot to break election law - by having a US company secretly pay for three influential political polls that benefitted the party. Earlier in the investigation, Reform’s Head of Policy James Orr and senior advisor Dan Jukes arranged for a Verbatim reporter to pay for the polls through a US company. Orr and Jukes believed the firm was run by the reporter’s American father. Mr Farage was filmed by undercover reporters from @Verbatim_Media as part of a year-long investigation that Channel 4 News has thoroughly checked and verified. This meeting took place in his Clacton constituency in July - when Mr Farage was fighting a by-election he called after separate allegations about his finances. Watch the full investigation on YouTube.

On the physics funding crisis in the UK - there are some issues of nuance, shall we say, in the attached article below. The reason STFC had 'no choice' but to cut so many projects (Jodrell and many more) was NOT the government's spending review settlement. It was a deliberate choice by UKRI (as confirmed by a UKRI board member on X, you'll find it in my replies) to refocus spend away from STFC science and labs and towards other areas which, it asserts, will lead to more ‘impact’. UKRI have the power to do this. However, as the HoC Select committee pointed out, we have not been able to see a detailed record of the process, impact assessment or consultation that led to such a seismic shift in UK science policy. Who made the decision? As @ChiOnwurah wrote in an open letter to UKRI / STFC in March: ‘What is clear is that, despite your assertions to the contrary in evidence to my committee and our counterparts in the House of Lords, widespread cuts have been proposed before adequate consultation with those affected was undertaken. This is wholly unacceptable and represents a failure for which DSIT, UKRI and STFC leadership must bear responsibility, and act urgently to address.’

This sums things up well enough ... a UKRI fuck-up, and JB is just the tip of the iceberg.
Jodrell Bank is the most visible causality of UKRI’s short sighted ‘vision’ for science, but as you’ll see below, there are many other valuable UK facilities and collaborations at risk. We became aware of the problem in the autumn of last year. It is not a result of the overall funding settlement for science after the spending review, which was quite generous I would say in the circumstances. Neither as far as we can tell is it a direct decision by ministers (all of whom have now gone in any case). Rather the problems appears to have been caused by senior management at UKRI focusing on short term economic ‘impact’ (whatever that means) rather than doing their job as custodians of the foundations of science. What must happen now is that the new ministerial team make the time (and space ;-)) to review the upcoming catastrophe, and instruct UKRI to do their job and focus on making Britain the best place in the world to do science, now and in the future.

Questionable policy to promote porky scratchings when there's a shortage of NHS dentists.
Pubs deserve our backing. I’m not sure some of @JohnHealey_MP's choices here do though... Our 20% cut in business rates will benefit thousands of pubs, clubs and music venues across the country.

EXCLUSIVE: STFC’s true cost overrun revealed as nearly £700m. Figure calls into question transparency from UKRI leadership amid cuts to science facilities. STFC had told its staff it had to reduce spending by £162 million. researchprofessionalnews.com…

It’s horrible that the US is doing this to football, turning it into a Super-Bowl-style commercial clown show, totally abusing a tradition they don’t care about or understand.

This safely goes down as one of the worst World Cups in my lifetime. Everything has been commercialised, corruption is so blatant that it's insulting to viewers, all while politics and division bleed through the tournament. The US should never host again #WorldCup2026

Good to see Spain win ... The only team in the final to play any football, and they played quality football through the tournament. Argentina classless cheats and thugs as shown after the final whistle. Also, Rooney's assessment of the half-time rubbish was bang-on.

One of the biggest misconceptions about universities is that academics have some sort of influence over how universities are run. That has not been true in the English-speaking world for decades.

It was inevitable, wasn't it🙄 Of course the Telegraph would run with something like this👇 So let's remove some of the rose-tinted spectacles and also look at some of that data comparing 1976 with modern heat waves Because the 1976 nostalgia porn is wearing a bit thin at this stage 🧵1/23

Universities could run on far less if they were in fact universities. What they have become is very expensive.
THREAD: Gonna say it again: what a lot of us do in higher education, at least in the arts, humanities, and social sciences, should be very cheap. Yes, we have professional salaries, like teachers and nurses, but beyond that the things I normally actually need are very simple:...

Interesting how many people keep talking about the summer of 1976. What they may not know is that's not even in the current top 5 hottest UK summers. That has been beaten 5 times since 2003.
