This aging-related communication axis helps explain why older age increases
MASLD incidence: doi.org/10.1172/jci.insight.…
Anna Mae Diehl & team @DukeMedSchool describe an inter-organ aging axis in which hepatocytes determine the rate of organ aging during metabolic stress. The researchers used conditional KO mice to show loss of hepatocyte hedgehog signaling induces ferroptosis stress, lipid peroxidation, and cellular senescence.
The video shows blood perfusion in vivo after treatment with ferrostatin-1, representing restoration of hepatic blood perfusion in the liver and kidney.

Histologically normal liver was associated with better survival and lower recurrence after hepatic resection for HCC than both cirrhotic and diseased non-cirrhotic liver. These findings challenge the conventional cirrhotic/non-cirrhotic classification.
