EL NIÑO conditions have become the strongest in records dating back to 1950. Sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean (Niño region 3.4) have averaged almost +3°C higher than the long term average for the time of year so far in September. El Niño conditions are characterised by a sustained anomaly of at least +0.5°C and anything above +2.0°C is classed as a “very strong” episode. The current warmth already exceeds previous very strong episodes in 2015, 1997 and 1983:

British people should stock up on food and water because of the risk of water and power cuts due to the El Niño weather phenomenon, the environment secretary has warned.
Angela Eagle urged people to ensure they have enough essential supplies in case they are cut off from water and power for several days.
The current El Niño episode — a climate pattern where warmer water leads to warmer temperatures — is expected to be the strongest on record. The impacts will be felt differently around the world and places like the Amazon and Indonesia are expected to be drier than normal while the Horn of Africa will be unusually wet. Next year may be the hottest on record
