Team Elite Tryouts. Play with the best for maximum exposure and college assistance. No better organization and the best summer schedule. The choice is clear. Nobody doing it better in the Carolinas. Be Elite.

I recently heard that fewer than 175 players in the Class of 2028 have committed to D1 baseball programs so far. If accurate, let that sink in. Yet there are still so many players and parents with the “D1 mentality only”

Cool moment in Bahamas today. Throwing with Nolan on the beach and lifeguard came over. Fully expected him to ask us to stop but he instead wanted to play catch with Nolan! Guy didn’t quit smiling and talked baseball for a few before heading off to work. Love it!

Justin Verlander came home to Detroit this year to finish where he started. He got three and two thirds innings out of it. March 30, against Arizona. Five runs. That was the whole season. His left hip went. Then a hamstring. He has been rehabbing since early April, at 43 years old, with nothing on the line, for a team that is 74-84 and eliminated. He did it anyway, and Saturday in Pittsburgh he gets the ball one more time. Second to last day of the season. Both teams are out of it. Nothing at stake except this. Here is what the man did. Detroit took him second overall in 2004. He debuted on July 4, 2005. He won Rookie of the Year in 2006 and pitched in the World Series that same season. He threw a no-hitter in 2007. Another one in 2011. A third in 2019. In 2011 he won the Cy Young unanimously, won the MVP, and took the pitching triple crown. Pitchers do not win MVPs. He did. The Tigers traded him to Houston in 2017 and he won the World Series two months later. Then his elbow blew out. Tommy John surgery in September 2020, at 37, which is usually where the story ends. He missed all of 2021. He came back in 2022 and won his third Cy Young at 39. And another ring. Mets. Back to Houston. A year with the Giants in 2025. Then in February he signed a one year deal to come back to Detroit. Final line on a 21 year career: 266-159, a 3.33 ERA, and 3,554 strikeouts, which is eighth all time. Ten All-Star games, the last one this summer as a Legend Pick, where he announced he was done. Somebody asked him whether it was smart to push a hip and a hamstring that are not all the way healed just to pitch in a meaningless game. "What are we saving my arm for? It doesn't make a lot of sense." He also said the honest part out loud. "There's a chance that I could seriously hurt myself, but it's part of being a professional athlete at 43." He has not thrown a competitive pitch in almost six months. He might get hit around. He does not care. Twenty one years ago he threw his first big league pitch in a Tigers uniform. Saturday he throws his last one in the same one.

This week's assignment: take your son to one college game this fall. Any division, in fact, make it a division he thinks is beneath him. Watch his face in the third inning. Then ask Harvell's question on the drive home: Honestly, could you play here? The answer, either way, is worth more than a showcase invoice.
