Shudder movies are hit or miss for me, but I've heard good things about this one, so let's review. The Cycle is the newest horror film on Shudder starring Deborah Ann Woll (Daredevil) and Jeffrey Donovan (Burn Notice) where Woll plays a Forensic anthropologist who learns that her estranged father is murdered, but learns his murder is linked to a bunch of other murders in the area so she teams up with Donovan to find out who or what is doing it. I never saw the trailer, so I don't know what was given away, so I won't spoil what the plot twist was. Woll I'm a fan of because she's Karen on Daredevil (The only good Karen I know) and this is where you get to see her be a lead, and I thought she thrived. She has a lot of wordless emotion in her face that works with her character as someone that never had a good relationship with her dad, he left her and her mom when she was 4. She's essentially Karen Paige, but not working at a law firm. She has a likability to her; and Jeffrey Donovan is finally not playing a d*ck for the first time. I also appreciated the fact the movie was set in Oregon, and they actually filmed the movie in Oregon to give it more of that practical look and feel to it. When we got to the plot twist of it, I got to be honest, I kind of saw it coming. The way the bodies were found that could mean one thing (Which I will not spoil for you) but I thought the rest of it was handled pretty well. Now how the movie ends, it gives the impression that there could be a sequel. To which I say: Can't horror movies just end on one? Does everything need to be a franchise? To which the studios will say "YAAS B**CH!" For my criticisms it more so has to do with the practical effects of what came later in the film. I appreciated the Rick Baker/John Landis touch to it, then other times it looked pretty hokey (I'm pretty sure y'all have already guessed it by now). As far as Shudder movies go, this is one of the better ones. GRADE: MIDDLE SHELF (C PLUS) #shudder #horror – at Olmos Park, TX
