Five years ago, yesterday, the Chiefs went to Tennessee and lost, 27-3. Their record was 3-4. It looked like the magic was gone. Then they won 8 straight and 9 of 10 and hosted their 4th straight AFC Championship Game. I'm not saying that's gonna happen again. I'm simply saying that one game is not a season and it doesn't erase what happened the first five weeks. But this game shined a rather large spotlight on several problems that the 5-0 start masked to a great degree. They have an issue at OT. Khalil Benson has been a godsend but he's not ready to be the anchor of a top shelf OL, at least not yet. When the schedule came out in May, there is no way they thought they'd line up in Seattle in Week 7 with Khalil Benson and Josh Ezeudu starting at OT. This was absolutely the worst defense to face in that condition. They have an issue at WR. Five wideouts. Thirteen targets. Six catches for 39 yards. Tyquan Thornton is not coming back. Rashee Rice is but who knows when? You saw the value of a truly great WR in JSN. The Chiefs have no one worthy — no pun intended — of even carrying his pads. The end result was that the Seahawks had to expend very little energy or strategy to shut down Ken Walker. With his best weapon neutralized and no one else able to pick him up, Patrick Mahomes turned into a mere mortal, and sometimes something less than that. Everything about their offense stunk tonight. The pass rush was, again, non-existent. Zero sacks for the 4th time in 5 games and just TWO hits on Sam Darnold, both by George Karlaftis. Minus a pass rush, the Chiefs' secondary was asked to cover for longer than you'd like them to and the results were not good. L'Jarius Sneed couldn't cover anyone. Mansoor Delane could but JSN was just better, as he is against almost everyone. And then there was Harrison Butker, who's best kicks are slipping further and further into the past. He misses kicks in every fashion imaginable now — 15 since the beginning of last season, more than any other kicker in the NFL. Tonight, all of that was way too much to overcome for a team playing on the road in an historically crazy environment against a defending champion with their backs against the wall. They'll play better next Sunday, if for no better reason than they cannot possibly play this poorly again. I think they'll probably win. Denver isn't Seattle. They're not gonna hang 400 yards on KC. And they're banged up on both sides of the ball. Either way, it will tell us more about what happened tonight than we currently know.
