#CaseAgainstPoverty campaign #update: To promote International Day for the Elimination of #Poverty on October 17th we will help mass file complaints to the @UNHumanRights tribunals on #October17th. In September we will share tips and sample language to make it easier to do.

We aren't a big organization. Staff are 3 pwd with lived experience of poverty. While we will tackle broad issues, the case strategy is narrow. It's about creating obligations for government, asking legal questions and getting disclosure as much as it is striking down bad laws.

There are other volunteer opportunities as well for anything you may wish to provide the campaign. In particular, content creators, data miners and sorters would be amazing. We aim to raise $5m to $10m for the campaign so if you know some cool cats with cash to burn... Hi!

Using a "nothing about us without us" framework, steering committee members will vote to decide the 14 court cases that will get funding and support from the Case Against Poverty organisation & be a general advisory committee for the campaign. Applications close on Sept 5th.

Hello Canada, The Case Against Poverty is seeking 21 volunteer Steering Committee members. 1 seat to represent each provincial/territorial region (13) and 8 equity seats (Indigenous, racial minorities, disablity, women, 2SLGBTQIA+, francophone, youth & aged).

Given the Federal, Provincial and Territorial governments have doubled down on legislated poverty, it is up to us all to take up the fight. The Case Against Poverty is about changing the system not any individual outcome. With your help we hope to end legislated poverty by 2030.

It is sweaty and uncomfortable with a gown, gloves, mask, and shield on to be a caregiver in hospital for my BIL, but that is a tiny price of inconvenience to bear to prevent extreme and life altering (or ending) infections of #COVID19. #BringBackMasks cause #CovidIsNotOver.

Why #TheCaseAgainstPoverty? Well, if average rent is more than 100% of your income, that's a problem. Government can't design to harm by being ignorant of reality when they control the income source. If governments won't be responsible, we have to compel them with the courts.

Did you know that maternity leave didn't become standard until after the 42 day CUPW strike of 1981 won it for their members? Unions call for fair treatment, #LivingWage, pensions/benefits, worker safety, dignity and a #FairFuture because worker's rights are #HumanRights.

Slowly, too slowly, worker's rights grew. In 1945 arbitration (at Ford) led to the Rand Formula. "...every worker in a union shop, member or no, benefits from efforts made by the union in contract negotiations. The formula is meant to prevent anyone from getting a free ride.”

Sadly, many gains came only after the violent crackdowns by employers/government on workers that made the status quo finally notice the atrocities and demand real and meaningful action. (e.g. Winnipeg #GeneralStrike 1919 or The Battle of Ballentyne Pier 1935.)
