Tax credits for renewables are expiring in the coming years. Less widely known is that construction costs for gas-fired power plants are soaring at unprecedented rates. This will be reflected in electric bills for years to come.

As the body of the article says: "Even if the cost of green hydrogen production were to fall to $2/kg, the researchers calculate that if storage and delivery costs stay at current levels, only three end-uses would have a cost of carbon abatement below $500 per tonne of CO2:

ammonia production, oil refining, and direct-reduced iron for green steel." Which is not exactly news. There is plenty of evidence that states that GH2 should be prioritised for H2A, due to a variety of factors, including costs.

Liebherr: 475 Electric Mining Machines Deal Sealed Everything will be electrified except rockets but large mining vehicles will. The 🇩🇪 German company Liebherr has signed the largest order in the company's 75-year history and will supply 475 electric mining machines to the 🇦🇺🦘 Australian mining company Fortescue. It is a ‘historic deal’ and the largest in the company's 75-year history, Liebherr announced on signing the billion-dollar order. The contract between Liebherr and Fortescue is worth 2.8 billion dollars and comprises 475 Liebherr machines - including 360 autonomous battery-powered giant dump trucks. They are to be used in mines in Australia. The dump truck is the result of ‘years of hard work and collaboration between Liebherr and Fortescue in the areas of autonomy and zero emissions’, Liebherr added. The dump truck is equipped with a battery electric drive system developed by Fortescue's technology division Fortescue Zero. Fortescue also developed the fast-charging solution for the electric giant. The charging system can supply up to six megawatts of electricity, meaning that the giant dump truck, named T 264, can be charged in just 30 minutes, according to the press release.

And good analysis one of my favourite things.. using renewables to produce hot briquetted iron to rapidly decarbonise the global steel sector..

"Why are electricity prices so high if renewables break generation records and are so cheap?" I have been asked. The main reason: Gas still sets the price 63% of the time in wholesale electricity markets in EU27 & >90% in some countries. The graphic is from the Draghi Report.

The videotheque of Babel is composed of an indefinite, perhaps infinite number of hexagonal galleries. In the center of each gallery is a ventilation shaft, bounded by a low railing.
A film is a video file made up of ones and zeroes, which means every film is just a very very very very very very very very big number. It therefore follows that there are a finite number of possible films. If my calculations are correct, by 2036, we will run out of films.

This is interesting lesson for other countries: Grid batteries in the UK have already saturated the "frequency response" market (because you don't actually need that much battery to provide all the FR the grid needs), and instead revenues now coming from balancing and trading..
This path is likely to be followed by other markets too. Batteries dominate and commoditize frequency reserve markets within a few years...

The incoming Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum could be the first head of state with a solid track record of energy policy publications. And maybe the head of state with the highest h-index (31 at G Scholar). Any contenders?

Still many relevant scenarios rely on lots more of current wind manufacturing capacity to reach 1.5. While solar exceeded those targets. I wonder if we need some reconsiderations.
Solar surged in 2023 📈 74% more solar was installed in 2023 than in 2022, the fastest percentage rise since 2011. Based on @IRENA’s renewable capacity data, we present six charts that explain 2023’s record solar surge. Key highlights in a #thread
