An Indianapolis school board candidate says "the wealthier are getting vouchers for their summer vacations." Indiana vouchers help pay private school tuition, and every family now qualifies regardless of income. Picking your kid's school isn't a vacation.

The next bold move for educational freedom: Give charter schools in states with universal education savings accounts a pathway to become private schools.
Education savings accounts are giving families unprecedented choice. Still, several reforms are needed to ensure charter schools can adapt to this new era of educational freedom. reason.com/2026/10/09/let-ch…

Treasury's rules are out. The federal scholarship tax credit is $1,700 per person, $3,400 for a married couple. AFC estimates 90% of K-12 kids could qualify, and states can't add strings. Donations open Jan. 1. Next up: getting it to families. efinstitute.org/2026/10/fede…

Some years ago we created the Education Freedom Research Database on our website (link in first reply below).
Over the past several days, we've overhauled it and updated it. It's not 100% comprehensive (yet!), but we're working on getting it there.
Check it out!
We hope this is a useful resource for you!

Value-added ratings are supposed to measure school quality. In Ohio, they also punish schools that serve mobile kids.
@PeerReReview finds a robust negative link between student mobility and school VAM scores—even after demographics and baseline achievement. High-mobility schools look worse on the metric the state uses for report cards.
If mobility hurts learning and the model doesn’t account for it, you’re grading churn as failure. Study: efinstitute.org/wp-content/u…

Phoenix local news doesn’t cover district and charter problems the same way.
When the harm is a charter, the operator gets blamed 54% of the time. When it’s a district problem, the board that acted is blamed only 38%. ESAs as the subject? Waste/fraud/abuse is the modal frame. Favorable choice framing: about one story in nine.
I coded a decade of Phoenix-market coverage. Full working paper: efinstitute.org/wp-content/u…
