I had a nice talk with Bo Winegard for Aporia. Why do people enjoy being morally outraged? One possibility is that every accusation reshuffles the social deck, and the people enjoying the outrage usually come out ahead.

My review of Kathryn Paige Harden's new book Original Sin is out in Quillette. Harden disavows the quasi-religious conception of free will that underpinned The Genetic Lottery only to embrace a new brand of mysticism that licenses her to reaffirm the same social-justice ideology.

In your writings, how often have you stuck with the Voldemort principle? Specifically avoiding to link or cite certain people or their work because you didn't want to stir or get into trouble 'by association', or help their reach grow? Scotty A provides a 2022 example here. Noah Carl has the write-up on this principle in practice. aporiamagazine.com/p/he-who-…

I thought Scott Cooper's Black Mass was a quite good deconstruction of the mob film. Instead of joy, charm, charisma, family, and tragedy we get hypocrisy, betrayal, and petty greed. The antihero is drained of appealing qualities and is just a ghastly representation of appetite.

Perhaps one might argue that Black Mass accepts Augustine's view of evil: Malum est privatio boni.
