Ani engine?! ๐Ÿ”ฅ Rural women are the engines that drive our economy! New week, renewed energy and a call to turn recognition into action! As @UCOBAC_ โ€˜s Executive Director Ms Frances Birungi (@frances_birungi) reminds us, celebrating rural women must go beyond words. It means securing their land rights. Secure land rights strengthen food security, climate resilience and womenโ€™s economic empowerment. Would you spray your farm with a chemical Europe has banned? ๐Ÿค” Many Ugandan farmers do, without knowing it. Of the 115 pesticide active ingredients registered in Uganda, 55 are highly hazardous, and most of those are not approved in the EU countries that export them โ˜ ๏ธ Only 31% of our farmers have ever been trained to handle them safely. Tomorrow, 22 October, the Agroecology Collaborative, convened by CEFROHT, hosts a National Dialogue on phasing out highly hazardous pesticides and launches the Joint National HHPs Strategy for Uganda ๐ŸŒฑ Safe food is a right โš–๏ธ #BanHHPs #Agroecology #WorldFoodDay #CefrohtUG

From Bambara groundnuts to flour: adding value to local crops. At the 2nd National Agroecology Festival, Basoita Alexander from Iganga District is showcasing Bambara groundnut seeds and flour alongside cowpeas, local bean varieties, Arabica coffee and composite flour. His display highlights how locally available crops can serve as both planting materials and ingredients for food products. By showcasing diverse legumes and processed foods, exhibitors like Alexander are drawing attention to the opportunities for crop diversification, local food production and value addition. #NAF2026 #NationalAgroecologyFestival #AgroecologyNow

Dignitaries, including central government officials, local government leaders, researchers and civil society representatives also visited Orungo Farmer Field School in Amuria district, where small-scale farmers shared their experiences with indigenous seeds. Farmers reported that local groundnut varieties such as Obino and Egoromoit have performed better than some improved varieties in yield, maturity and resilience to harsh weather. Abino, for instance, reportedly performed better during the recent drought. Established by @ESAFFUG the seed bank preserves these varieties and makes them available to farmers when needed. @noradno @OxfaminUganda @1000currents @humundi_ong @hekseperworld @Sida #NationalAgroecologyFestival | #AgroecologyNow

2/3 What stood out to me is the farmersโ€™ experience with indigenous seeds. They say local varieties such as Abino and Egolomoit have performed better than some improved varieties in yield, maturity and resilience to harsh weather. Abino, for instance, reportedly performed better during the recent drought. Established in 2007 with support from ESAFF Uganda, the seed bank preserves these varieties and makes them available to farmers when needed. One message stuck with me: the seed should serve people, not the other way round. #NAF2026 #AgroecologyNow

As part of #NAF2026, we visited Okunguro Farmer Field School in Serere district, joined by officials from @MAAIFUganda and the Uganda Parliamentary Alliance on Food and Nutrition Security, at a time when small-scale farmers are seeking formal recognition and registration of their farm-saved seed varieties. At Okunguro, farmers are actively engaged in local value chains, particularly around Edei Dei sorghum and other local varieties. Dr. Asio Teddy Mary, Commissioner for Seed Inspection and Certification at @MAAIFUganda, emphasised the need to strengthen such farmer groups through training in proper seed storage, post-harvest management and seed bulking, as well as scaling up production to meet growing market demand. @noradno @OxfaminUganda @1000currents @humundi_ong @hekseperworld @Sida #NationalAgroecologyFestival | #AgroecologyNow
