The 12th Tana High-Level Forum, themed "Pathways to Peace in Africa: Economic Sovereignty and Geopolitical Transformation," successfully concluded today on the shores of Lake Tana in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia.
In his closing remarks, the Tana Forum Board Chairperson and President of the Republic of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, urged African leaders to move beyond dialogue and take concrete action to address the continent’s challenges and advance sustainable solutions. He noted that sustaining peace requires solidarity, integrity, unity, and the promotion of an inclusive society.
The forum concluded with a high-level panel discussion featuring former presidents and prime ministers. Drawing on insights from previous sessions, the closing panel sought to converge all debates, ideas, approaches, and recommendations to discuss how to chart Africa's geopolitical and economic future and highlight urgent priorities where action is needed most.

Today, we inaugurate the Kechene–Ambassador–Gihon– Irreecha–Bambis Riverside Development, a 351-hectare, 10-kilometer corridor advancing our vision of a modern, green, and inclusive Addis Ababa.
With pedestrian walkways, cycling lanes, and integrated transport infrastructure, this development creates a more accessible and liveable urban environment. Its children’s playgrounds, plazas and amphitheaters, sports facilities, and eight fountains and water features offer new spaces for recreation, social interaction, and community life. Parking facilities and eight electric vehicle charging centres, capable of charging over 100 vehicles simultaneously, further strengthen its modern infrastructure.
Through river management, soil and water conservation, and riverside green spaces, we are bringing environmental restoration together with urban transformation. Equally important, we are expanding economic opportunities. A dedicated market centre enables residents who previously lived along the river corridor to produce, display, and sell handicrafts, while an agricultural produce mall connects agricultural producers with markets.
Our vision is to build a city that is not only beautiful but also productive and inclusive; a city that serves its people today and generations to come!

The Tana Forum’s Special Envoys’ Dialogue officially commenced today in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia, bringing together high-level diplomats and regional leaders to discuss the evolving geopolitics of the Horn of Africa and the growing security challenges in the Red Sea.
In his welcoming remarks, Ambassador Redwan Huseen, Director General of Ethiopia’s National Intelligence and Security Service, underscored that the region’s vast economic potential and critical maritime trade routes are increasingly threatened by growing militarization, rivalries among foreign powers, and renewed attacks on commercial shipping in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
He emphasized that Red Sea security cannot be ensured by a few states alone, but requires urgent and collective cooperation among regional states and reliable global partners.
As an anchor state entirely dependent on the Red Sea for its maritime trade, Ethiopia has a vital responsibility to safeguard its commercial shipping and avert emerging security threats, he added.
Following the opening remarks, high-level panel discussions are underway under the theme “Regional Security in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea.” Moderated by Paul-Simon Handy, Regional Director for East Africa and Representative to the African Union, the panel brought together prominent African and international envoys to discuss the region’s evolving geopolitical dynamics.
The speakers included Getachew Reda, Minister Advisor on East African Affairs; Guang Cong, UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa; Frédéric Clavier, French Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa; Ambassador Heiko Nitzschke, Germany’s Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa; and Pekka Haavisto, Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Sudan.
The 12th Tana High-Level Forum on Security in Africa is being held under the theme “Pathways to Peace in Africa: Economic Sovereignty and Geopolitical Transformation,” bringing together regional and international stakeholders to address Africa’s evolving security landscape.

Today, we officially inaugurated the Megech Irrigation Dam Project, a major milestone for historic Gondar and its surrounding community. Though delayed for years, we resolved execution challenges through the Medemer philosophy to realize this vital project.
With a capacity of 185 million cubic meters, the dam will irrigate over 17,000 hectares, directly benefiting tens of thousands of local farmers. Beyond supplying reliable, clean drinking water to Gondar and nearby towns, it stimulates a broader economic growth. The artificial lake will foster urban agriculture, large-scale fisheries, and tourism resorts, creating massive job opportunities for local youth.
While this success stems from rigorous monitoring, Gondar still deserves much more development. I urge the public to actively participate in its development. We remain dedicated to ensuring Ethiopia’s progress is inclusive, benefiting all regions and citizens.

I had the chance to speak about Ethiopia’s CoP32 presidency during an event organised by the Delegation of the European Union to the United Kingdom and the Grantham Institute at the Royal African Society.
I have assured participants that as the diplomatic capital of Africa and the home of the African Union, Addis Ababa offers a natural setting for dialogue between countries, regions and perspectives.
Ethiopia intends to use this position to encourage inclusion, build trust and advance a shared commitment to climate action.
I have also reiterated Ethiopia’s position for Africa to be recognised as a partner in shaping climate solutions, not simply as a region in need of support.
Africa faces substantial climate risks, but it also has important opportunities to contribute to the global response through renewable energy, ecosystem restoration, sustainable agriculture and climate-resilient development.
Ethiopia will work with African partners and the wider international community to ensure that COP32 is inclusive, constructive and focused on practical outcomes.

Today, I had the honour of attending Mashujaa Day in Eldoret, Kenya, where I delivered remarks paying tribute to the heroes who fought for freedom and those who made the ultimate sacrifices to safeguard their nation. I honour their courage and legacy!
Kenya’s history of courage and sacrifice resonates deeply with Ethiopia’s own story of Adwa, where Ethiopians from every corner of the country united to defend their homeland. These shared histories remind us that freedom was never given; it was won through courage, unity, and sacrifice.
As our histories are intertwined, so too must our futures be. Through the spirit of Medemer, Ethiopia and Kenya must continue building on our existing cooperation in clean energy, connectivity, telecommunications, and trade to create greater opportunities and shared prosperity for our people.
To all those honoured today, I salute you. Happy Mashujaa Day!

In his interview with the Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation (EBC), Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed addressed the future of the Tigray region, the TPLF, the Pretoria Peace Agreement and Ethiopia’s relations with Eritrea. Here are the key points of his message.
🔹 𝗧𝗜𝗚𝗥𝗔𝗬 𝗜𝗦 𝗕𝗜𝗚𝗚𝗘𝗥 𝗧𝗛𝗔𝗡 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗧𝗣𝗟𝗙
The Tigrayan people have existed for thousands of years, while the TPLF is a political organization of approximately 50 years. The people of Tigray will continue to exist regardless of the organization’s future.
“Political organizations rise and fall, governments change, but the people and the country continue to exist.”
🔹 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗧𝗜𝗚𝗥𝗔𝗬𝗔𝗡 𝗣𝗘𝗢𝗣𝗟𝗘 𝗛𝗔𝗩𝗘 𝗣𝗔𝗜𝗗 𝗔 𝗛𝗘𝗔𝗩𝗬 𝗣𝗥𝗜𝗖𝗘
The TPLF’s policies and political outlook do not reflect the dignity and identity of the Tigrayan people. Prime Minister Abiy emphasized that the people’s existence and security must never be tied to the survival of a political organization.
🔹 𝗬𝗢𝗨𝗡𝗚 𝗣𝗘𝗢𝗣𝗟𝗘 𝗦𝗛𝗢𝗨𝗟𝗗 𝗟𝗜𝗩𝗘 𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗜𝗥 𝗙𝗨𝗧𝗨𝗥𝗘
Prime Minister Abiy urged Tigrayan youth not to sacrifice their lives for political leaders, arguing that young people should pursue their own future and their country’s development rather than continue fighting.
“Why should you die so that they can live comfortably?”
He called on young people to put down their Kalashnikovs and return to education, business, agriculture and development.
🔹 𝗣𝗥𝗘𝗧𝗢𝗥𝗜𝗔 𝗠𝗨𝗦𝗧 𝗟𝗘𝗔𝗗 𝗧𝗢 𝗣𝗘𝗔𝗖𝗘, 𝗡𝗢𝗧 𝗥𝗘𝗡𝗘𝗪𝗘𝗗 𝗪𝗔𝗥
The Pretoria Agreement was intended to end hostilities, restore basic services and facilitate disarmament. Prime Minister Abiy said the TPLF had undermined this process by pursuing weapons procurement and recruiting young people by force instead of disarming.
He stressed that war, particularly war fought for the interests of external forces, brings devastating consequences for Tigrayan youth and society.
🔹 𝗧𝗜𝗚𝗥𝗔𝗬 𝗠𝗨𝗦𝗧 𝗠𝗢𝗩𝗘 𝗙𝗥𝗢𝗠 𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗙𝗟𝗜𝗖𝗧 𝗧𝗢 𝗗𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗟𝗢𝗣𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗧
Prime Minister Abiy called for the Tigray region to move beyond displacement and recurring conflict toward peace, irrigation, agriculture, mining, industry and urban corridor development. He also emphasized the need for an environment in which the people of Tigray can freely choose their political direction.
🔹 𝗛𝗜𝗦𝗧𝗢𝗥𝗬 𝗜𝗦 𝗕𝗜𝗚𝗚𝗘𝗥 𝗧𝗛𝗔𝗡 𝗣𝗢𝗟𝗜𝗧𝗜𝗖𝗔𝗟 𝗢𝗥𝗚𝗔𝗡𝗜𝗭𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗦
Prime Minister Abiy invoked historical figures such as Emperor Yohannes IV and Ras Alula, emphasizing Tigray’s historical contribution to Ethiopia. He said that the TPLF’s political choices and alliances contradict the historical legacy it invokes.
🔹 𝗘𝗥𝗜𝗧𝗥𝗘𝗔 𝗠𝗨𝗦𝗧 𝗖𝗛𝗢𝗢𝗦𝗘 𝗖𝗢𝗢𝗣𝗘𝗥𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 𝗢𝗩𝗘𝗥 𝗗𝗘𝗦𝗧𝗔𝗕𝗜𝗟𝗜𝗭𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡
The Prime Minister criticized Eritrea’s ruling establishment, the PFDJ (Shaebia), for neglecting its people’s development while serving forces hostile to Ethiopia. He contrasted Eritrea’s former industrial and commercial prominence with the decline of its cities and called for peaceful relations and shared development.
He warned that if Shaebia rejects the call for peace and continues on a destructive path, the consequences would be extremely severe.
🔹 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗖𝗛𝗢𝗜𝗖𝗘 𝗜𝗦 𝗕𝗘𝗧𝗪𝗘𝗘𝗡 𝗪𝗔𝗥 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗗𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗟𝗢𝗣𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗧
Across the interview, Prime Minister Abiy’s message was that political organizations must not place their interests above the people, young people should not be sacrificed for endless conflict, and both Tigray and the wider region should prioritize peace, cooperation and development.

Can Ethiopia shape the future—or will the future shape Ethiopia?
In 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘉𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘧 — 𝘖𝘤𝘵𝘰𝘣𝘦𝘳 2026 𝘌𝘥𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s five-year vision sets out an ambitious agenda for building a new Ethiopian civilization.
The vision spans economic self-reliance, food security, technological innovation, institutional reform, national defence, and strategic maritime access. At its heart lies 𝘔𝘦𝘥𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘳—the idea that unity, cooperation and collective strength can help Ethiopia navigate a rapidly changing world.
The central message is that Ethiopia must learn from its history without being confined by it; modernize without losing its roots; strengthen its sovereignty; and build institutions and capabilities that endure across generations.
The ambition is bigger than development. It is about Ethiopia’s capacity to determine its own destiny and shape its place in the world.
Can this vision translate into a lasting national legacy?
