4 years ago, the UK government left the #EU. 4 years later on 31.01. 2024 after almost 31 years, I am retiring @EU_Commission . My sadness is the opportunity I had is no longer available to #Scots or to other #UK citizens. To work together as an EU team to strive for a better EU.

The death penalty is inadmissible because it is an attack on the inviolability and dignity of the person. The common good can be safeguarded and the requirements of justice can be met without recourse to capital punishment: effective systems of detention have been developed that protect citizens while at the same time do not completely deprive those who are guilty of the possibility of redemption. #NoDeathPenalty

In awarding this year’s #NobelPeacePrize, the Norwegian Nobel Committee wants to remind the world that the rule of law – national and international – underpins the system we have set up to ensure peace and resolve conflicts non-violently. Peace requires justice. History has shown that a world operating without the rule of law is unjust, unwise and inhumane. The judges – those who guard the thin red line between order and chaos – are therefore highly deserving of our praise. But today, as these same judges are sanctioned, and their institutions are attacked, we need people of courage, vision and determination – qualities that 2026 peace laureate Navi Pillay demonstrates in her work on the bench. #NobelPrize

51 countries are united today in our support for Ukraine at the UN General Assembly. Since March 2025, Ukraine has agreed to a full, immediate and unconditional ceasefire. We call on Russia to finally do the same. Ukraine wants peace. We want peace. Russia must stop its aggression, accept a ceasefire, and engage meaningfully in negotiations towards a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in accordance with international law.

After World War II, the world made a promise: even in war, there are limits we must never cross. That promise became the Geneva Conventions, a universal commitment to protect civilians, the wounded, prisoners of war and humanitarian workers, among others. Today, with over 130 armed conflicts worldwide, twice as many as 15 years ago, these rules are under immense pressure. Over 110 countries have joined the Global Initiative on international humanitarian law to strengthen commitment to the rules that limit suffering in war. The Geneva Conventions do not protect the powerful. They protect people caught in war. And upholding them is the responsibility of every country on Earth. A single Permanent Member of the Security Council can block a resolution, even if a majority of Members support it. That’s known as the veto right. 🇺🇳 France and Mexico have introduced an initiative to suspend this right: Permanent Members would pledge to voluntarily refrain from using the veto in situations involving mass atrocities. The goal: to keep the Council from being paralyzed when faced with the most serious crimes. Major progress this year: for the first time, another Permanent Member of the Security Council, the United Kingdom, joined the initiative, which now enjoys the support of 128 nations. This is more or less the same deal that has been in place in Greenland for eight decades. Any new nuances could have been added without the threats, drama, clumsy covert campaigns and overt attempts to buy influence
From State Dept official background statement on U.S./Greenland/Denmark deal: •The agreement also explicitly bans any non-NATO base in Greenland and bans adversaries from making investments in Greenland that could threaten the United States. ◦Under the previous status quo, any country, including adversaries, could be allowed to build a military base in Greenland or send troops to Greenland. By contrast, under this agreement no non-NATO country may build a base in Greenland or maintain a troop presence in Greenland. ◦Under this agreement, only the U.S. and our allies can make sensitive investments in Greenland, eliminating the previous status quo in which adversaries have been investing in Greenland’s sensitive sectors without investment screening. ◦This agreement guarantees that China and Russia cannot have a base in Greenland, they cannot send troops to Greenland, and the necessary mechanisms are in place to prevent investment in sensitive sectors.

Since 2025, Americans in and close to the administration have worked to weaken and break up Canada; to use money to influence the loyalties of Greenlanders; to shape elections in Germany, Poland, Argentina, Brazil. No longer seeing themselves as the leaders of the democratic world, the new American elite are looking instead to enrich themselves, using the federal government.
