At the same time Man Utd are being fried and battered by Grimsby, Rangers are 9–1 down on aggregate to Club Brugge.
The link? Managers enslaved to dogma. Amorim clings to a 3-4-3 that asks huge demands of every role and can be undone by basic tactical ploys, which teams across the football pyramid can use.
Russell Martin meanwhile is a pseudo-Pep, parroting positional play with none of the nuance, trying to force patterns onto squads completely unsuited to execute them. Both are so wedded to their principles that their rigidity actively handicaps their teams.
