I'm gone from this place. You can find me on Bluesky as EVincentelli and Threads as doublediamondev.
Did Covid expose underlying structural problems in American theater? We discussed this and more in with Michael Kaiser, the former Kennedy Center president who now advises performing arts groups in trouble.

Nora Ephron… I just can’t. The whole edifice relies on living in blithe affluence and never ever questioning it.

I'm interested in current artists responses to bad reviews (there's a story here today) and I think about how RARE and GENTLE bad reviews are nowadays. I was reminded just the other day that EBTG's Temperamental got 1 out of 10 in the NME. Which is objectively just mad/hilarious!
Another terrific piece to add to the evidence that’s been piling up: @zinoman should be in line for a Pulitzer in criticism. nytimes.com/2024/10/28/arts/…
My fave, L&B Spumoni Gardens, is included but a derisive, off-base description saying it's from the kids' menu (!) and the crust is "a little fried" (it's baked to a golden crust in ancient pans) will keep the influencer hordes away. nytimes.com/article/best-nyc…
A review of a new movie says it lacks “tension, danger, build, and stakes, the hallmarks of dramatic narrative” — which would fine if “The Golden Book” was a thriller but it’s an adaptation of a meditative, gentle Tove Jansson novel about grief, nature and time!
I’m going to put it out there now: Courtney Vandersloot goes to the Valkyries and Kelsey Plum comes to the Liberty.
I could not be any prouder of this amazing team effort about jump scares! nytimes.com/interactive/2024…
Now this warms the cockles of my heart @nyliberty #wnba
Another Manhattan theater space bites the dust. nytimes.com/2024/10/22/theat…
It’s not often an article looks back not just at a dance but at an epochal non-review of it. The piece (wisely?) doesn’t really bring up current debates about what critics can or cannot, should or shouldn’t say. nytimes.com/2024/10/21/arts/…
Elizabeth Marvel has my vote for finest stage actor of her generation (or any?) so it was incredibly exciting to have her on the podcast. marksvincentelli.substack.co…
So nervous about the Liberty game tonight that I want to magically wake up at 10pm and NY has won. #WNBAFinals
When did NYC audiences become so provincial? Quite a few walkouts at the fantastic “Showgirl” @nyuskirball tonight. Guys, I’m embarrassed for you.
When I interviewed the Blessed Madonna in 2017 — 2017!!! — her album was right around the corner. Turns out it was right around many, many corners. nytimes.com/2017/11/30/arts/…

1/4 Wrote about "Showgirl," a play inspired by "Showgirls" that's in NYC tonight and tomorrow. One of the people I interviewed for the piece was Rebeka Warrior, who wrote the score and is one of my favorite French musicians and performers. nytimes.com/2024/10/16/theat…
3/4 Rebeka Warrior is also in Kompromat with Vitalic. More of an electro-goth vibe. The new single hits the ooooof bit at 2:26. Oh my.

4/4 Rebeka Warrior is also in the duo Mansfield.TYA under her real name, Julia Lanoë. Their remix/rework of the Christophe song "Tu te moques" is one of my favorite tracks of the past 10 years. I could listen to it on a loop for hours, and in fact I have. youtu.be/_REBx90EOGE
