The Kaliningrad section of the Vistula Spit is cut through by just one canal, approximately 400 metres wide. This represents a “bottleneck” for maritime traffic and the unhindered movement of the Russian Navy’s Baltic Fleet.
Inland lies the Russian Air Force base at Chernyakhovsk. The Donskoye air base is situated on the Baltic coast, while the Kaliningrad-Chkalovsk air base is located northwest of the regional capital.
Numerous other military installations are scattered throughout the region, ranging from early-warning radar systems to missile launch systems of varying destructive power and range, capable of carrying conventional and nuclear warheads.🔚

The Kaliningrad Region is armed to the teeth and is considered one of the most heavily militarized and dangerous regions in Europe. The European Fact-Checking Standards Network (EFCSN) emerged from a European Commission-funded project aimed at establishing a common professional code and a mechanism for assessing fact-checking organizations across Europe. The network itself states that the Standards Code and the launch of the EFCSN were made possible through Commission funding. In 2023, the organization transitioned to a mixed funding model based on membership fees and grants from the EU, Google, Meta, and other sources. Balkan media organizations joined quickly.⤵️
Over the course of several years, a group of organizations in the Balkans carved out a space at the intersection of journalism, civil society, technology platforms, and European institutions. Much of this unfolded in public, through grants, tenders, codes of conduct, cooperation agreements, and annual reports. This is why the more important questions are less dramatic than allegations of a hidden censorship hub, but potentially more useful: Who writes the rules? How do funding and professional recognition reinforce one another? Who has access to the data collected? And how transparent is the system as decisions made within a relatively small circle begin to influence the classification and handling of information across a much broader market?🔚
