Jamaica continues to benefit from the support of its bilateral partners as recovery and reconstruction efforts advance following the passage of Hurricane Melissa. In this context, the Republic of Korea has contributed US$300,000 or just over $47 million in support of these efforts. The assistance was formally handed over to the Government and people of Jamaica by Mr. Kim Jinwook, Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea, during a handover ceremony today .
The donation was received by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator the Honourable @kaminajsmith, who was joined by Ambassador Sharon Miller, Officer-in-Charge of the Ministry, and Ms. Michelle Edwards, Senior Director for Mitigation, Planning and Research at the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM).
The Minister expressed Jamaica’s appreciation for the Republic of Korea’s solidarity and generous support to recovery and reconstruction efforts, which will help to strengthen national rebuilding initiatives and enhance resilience to future external shocks.
The Republic of Korea’s support is grounded in more than six decades of diplomatic relations and reflects a partnership that extends beyond moments of crisis. To date, bilateral ties continue to be advanced across a number of areas to include cooperation in capacity building, health, education, energy, agriculture and security, among others.
