It’s simple, but there’s so much meaning behind it. If you’ve followed my Notre Dame stories over the years, you know how much I appreciate the people, traditions, and relationships that make Notre Dame such a special place. And one of the things I’ve always admired about Coach Holtz is that his impact extends far beyond the football field. That’s exactly what the Holtz’s Heroes Foundation is all about. Built around the values of LOVE. TRUST. COMMITMENT., the foundation works to carry forward the lessons Coach Holtz instilled in his players, coaches, and staff. And they’re doing some pretty wonderful things. 💚 ☘️ Helping former student-athletes who are facing financial, physical, or mental hardships. ☘️ Providing scholarships to deserving young people, helping them pursue opportunities for a brighter future. ☘️ Giving back to communities in need through charitable works and service. ☘️🏈 THROWBACK THURSDAY: THIS ONE’S A LITTLE OFF THE RAILS! 🚂 Since Notre Dame has a bye week, I decided to do something a little different for this week’s Throwback Thursday. I’m sharing a story about my dad. And trust me, it’s a good one! 😂 Picture this: Thanksgiving 1963. My dad is a student at Notre Dame, and a classmate invites him and a few friends home to Long Island for the holiday. They enjoy Thanksgiving with his family, head to Yankee Stadium to watch Notre Dame take on Syracuse, and prepare to return to South Bend. Sounds like a pretty normal college adventure, right? Well, not exactly. First, the game took place just SIX DAYS after President John F. Kennedy’s assassination, when the entire country was still in shock. Then came the train ride home. What should have been a 16-hour trip turned into a 24-hour adventure that included an unexpected detour through CANADA, very little food, some pretty creative sleeping arrangements, and a bunch of hungry Notre Dame students practically cleaning out a store in Jackson, Michigan. And somewhere along the way, a newspaper photographer captured my dad SLEEPING UPSIDE DOWN IN HIS TRAIN SEAT! 🤣 Yes, I have the photographic evidence! More than 60 years later, I got to sit down with my dad and hear his memories of that unforgettable Thanksgiving weekend. I also found the original 1963 student newspaper article featuring his photograph, along with some fascinating accounts of the football game and the events surrounding it. This one is a little more personal than my usual football stories, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed putting it together. ☕️🍂 A busy day, a productive day, and a grateful heart! 💚 It's been one of those days where I've been going nonstop, but in the best possible way! Starting something new or stepping outside your comfort zone is never easy. There's always a learning curve, a little uncertainty, and those moments when you wonder if you'll ever get the hang of it. 😂 But here's the thing ... every day it gets a little easier. You learn something new, build a little more confidence, and before you know it, you're doing things you once thought were difficult without even thinking twice. Practice makes perfect, right? Or at least progress! 😉 I'm grateful for the opportunity to keep learning, trying new things, and seeing what sticks. Not everything will work out exactly as planned, but that's part of the adventure. And sometimes the unexpected opportunities turn out to be the best ones!
