🚨 New FIGO guidance on preventing post-caesarean sepsis
Post-caesarean sepsis is a leading cause of maternal mortality, with infection rates as high as 20% globally.
The new review in the @IJGOLive, provides evidence-based strategies to prevent these infections – including antibiotics 30–60 mins before surgery, vaginal & skin antiseptic prep, safe surgical practices, like glove changes after placental delivery and early recognition and rapid treatment to save lives.
🌍 With 75,000 maternal deaths annually linked to sepsis, implementing these practices is critical.

I in 5 deaths worldwide are due to sepsis.
Of these, 75,000 maternal deaths are due to sepsis- a preventable tragedy.
Cesarean births account for 21.1 % of global deliveries & post-cesarean sepsis remains a significant contributor to morbidity.

Diagnosis based on AKIN /kDIGOcriteria. Pregnancy creatinine are in lower range 44-77mmol/l.
Identify risk factors , the insult , Gestational age may give clues to etiology, MDT approach with obgy as lead.
Discard use of renal dysfunction it lacks urgency.
