At the India-Oman Economic Conference in New Delhi today, organised by the @EgrowFoundation. Few partnerships rest on ground this solid. In all our history the two countries have never had a conflict. Indians have lived and worked in Oman for centuries and are held in genuine regard there, and Omanis find the same welcome here. Most bilateral relationships never get a foundation like that. With CEPA now signed, the work is to build on it. These are complementary economies rather than competing ones, and energy, manufacturing, ports and skills are where that shows most clearly. Speaking from our own experience of operating in Oman since 2011, the policy environment there is as open and straightforward as any we have worked in. Indian industry should be looking at it far more closely than it does.

This discussion highlights that India’s new GDP series involves far more than a shift from single to double deflation - a) Double deflation did not raise growth: other data and methodological changes explain the higher manufacturing growth in the new series. b) Double deflation is data-intensive: separately measuring output and inputs requires detailed price data. c) Better data are improving GDP estimates: industry-specific factors, LLP data, corporate filings and surveys are making estimates more granular. d) Industry-level measurement is improving: double deflation better captures differences in industry growth and contributions. e) GDP measurement is becoming more dynamic: changing ASI weights and item-level prices capture shifts in production and input patterns. f) Quarterly estimates are improving: Proportional Denton benchmarking, company filings and GST data strengthen quarterly GDP measurement. g) The hybrid approach creates challenges: combining different estimation methods makes the aggregate implicit GDP deflator harder to interpret. h) Transparency remains essential: detailed methodology and accessible data are needed for independent verification and reproducibility.

This discussion highlights that BRICS must translate its growing global weight into tangible gains for developing economies: a) BRICS is not the Global South: the Global South is larger and far more diverse. b) Representation must create influence: greater voice must translate into better access to finance, markets and technology. c) Size does not guarantee economic gains: trade imbalances and manufacturing concentration remain key challenges. d) Commodity dependence must give way to value addition: industrialisation, technology transfer, skills and global value chains are critical. e) Africa is a key test: BRICS cooperation must support infrastructure, manufacturing, energy, connectivity and regional integration. f) Multipolarity creates choices, not automatically development: practical cooperation and implementation matter. g) For India, domestic capability remains critical: external partnerships can expand choices, but competitiveness and innovation determine bargaining strength. h) The ultimate test is delivery: more trade, investment, technology transfer, infrastructure finance and measurable outcomes—not declarations alone.
