Nigel Mansell turned down a reported Β£12 million to Β£13 million from Williams in 1992, because it would not put him level with Ayrton Senna. Then Senna told Frank Williams he would drive for the team for nothing. Mansell says that within 24 hours of winning the world title he had no seat for 1993, unless he took half his salary.
In the video below, from an interview out this month, he is asked if Williams let him go 2 days after he became champion. "No, first day," he says. Alain Prost had already signed, "and they didn't want me in the car with him." He had asked for a three-year contract and never got one.
Senna answers in the second half of the video, filmed days after the announcement. He admits "I've been trying to negotiate with the Williams team," and that many people think it is why Nigel is retiring. "I can tell you it is not." He puts it down to Mansell's "own problems with his own team," built up over "months and months."
The talks had run since March. Motor Sport magazine reported at the time that Mansell refused the Β£12 million to Β£13 million before the Spanish Grand Prix in May. He then won 9 races that year and took the title in Hungary with 5 rounds left. Days after he thought the new deal was agreed, Senna's free offer landed and the money came down.
On 13 September at Monza he read a statement to the press: "Due to circumstances beyond my control, I have decided to retire from Formula 1 at the end of this season." Williams' marketing director Sheridan Thynne tried to step in, saying Frank had now accepted the original terms. Mansell said so out loud and retired anyway, calling it "fair play or the lack of it."
I think Mansell lost the money on the day he won the title. Until Hungary, Williams needed him to win it. After Hungary, Williams owned the car that had won it, and Senna was asking to sit in it for free. If your value runs through someone else's machine, fix your price before you deliver, because afterwards the next man in line sets it.
Senna did not get the seat for 1993 either, because Prost's contract reportedly kept him out, and Mansell went to America and won the IndyCar title as a rookie. If you were Frank Williams in August 1992, would you pay the man who had just won you the title, or take the man offering to drive for nothing?
I post one story like this every day: a famous name, the money they made, and who ended up with it.

Ferrariβs turbo size was supposed to have been key to giving it an edge in Mexico.
But although it was quickest on Friday, it is not on the straights where its advantage is coming from. #F1.

F1βs new engine proposal looks quite good, intro in 2030/31
Reported by the ever interesting @andrewbensonf1 as V8 with slightly bigger capacity and more torque ICE torque + smaller turbo on a restricted boost pressure.
Hybrid energy system 100kw generally then an extra 100kw push to pass.
Initial reaction is they will be *much* easier to drive with more linear power delivery and less lag. Lighter and cheaper.
Why not reserve the full power pack for the push to pass thoughβ¦ an extra 130bhp is just going to get βlost in the noiseβ

AUTO MOTOR UND SPORT - The Mexican Grand Prix has regularly produced surprises in recent years. The unique conditions have repeatedly reshuffled the balance of power. The thin air affects the engines, cooling, and aerodynamics. The absence of the MGU-H this season is causing problems with boost pressure build-up. The question is, who can best overcome the turbo lag?

π¨| Hamiltonβs Theory Supported After US Grand Prix:
β Lewis Hamiltonβs suspicions that Ferrariβs rivals are holding back performance during practice have received support from former Haas team principal Guenther Steiner following the United States Grand Prix.
β Hamilton questioned how Mercedes and Red Bull managed to find significant additional pace in Q3 despite Ferrari appearing competitive throughout the earlier sessions. He remarked:
βThese guys must be turning up for that last Q3 because where did that time go?β
βIt felt like we were right there in the fight and the car was just as good asβ¦ we didnβt make any changes; the car didnβt flip upside down in Q3. It was a really good lap.β
β Hamilton also highlighted Ferrariβs continuing straight-line speed disadvantage compared with Mercedes and Red Bull.
βUltimately we do lose, I think we are a few tenths off on the straight as we usually are.β
β Speaking on the Chequered Flag podcast, Guenther Steiner suggested that Ferrari-powered cars have repeatedly appeared stronger during practice than their eventual qualifying results indicate.
βI think all the last races, the Ferrari engine cars in the free practices seem to be always faster than they ended up to be in qualifying.β
βIβve got the feeling that the other ones, I wouldnβt call it proper sandbagging, but the other ones hold something back before going to qualifying and Ferrari doesnβt.β
β Former World Champion Damon Hill questioned why Ferrari consistently reveals its potential early in the weekend, potentially creating unrealistic expectations among fans and within the team.
βWhy show your hand too early?β
β Hill suggested Ferrari could experiment with heavier fuel loads or reduced engine modes during practice, keeping its true performance less obvious until qualifying.
β Hill believes Ferrariβs tyre management and race pace remain competitive, even if its single-lap performance continues to fall short.
βThe fact of the matter is, the car in the race was very good, so they got a car thatβs kind on the tyres, and it seems to be a good race car.β

π¨ F1βs proposed V8 engine regulations are taking shape!
According to BBC Sport, the FIAβs proposal includes:

β‘ 200kW hybrid recovery capacity
π₯ Around 900 horsepower
π 100kW reserved for push-to-pass
βοΈ Target of 80kg lighter cars
π° Engine budget cap potentially cut by 50%
The goal is simpler, cheaper, more responsive cars that put greater emphasis on driver skill.
