Zoom out π Season through Round 7
Panathinaikos lead the NetRtg table (18.4) with the best defense (99.2), as in the last 5 games.
Two different recipes:
Valencia (9.2 Net): built on offense, 123.9 Off vs 114.7 Def.
Crvena Zvezda (5.0 Net): built on defense, 107.6 Off vs 102.6 Def.
β‘ Pace: Valencia are the fastest (78.6), Fenerbahce the slowest (71.4). The 3 best defenses (PAO, Fener, Crvena) all play at 74.4 or slower.
π‘οΈ The 6 worst NetRtg teams all allow 120+ points per 100 possessions.
Baskonia are 19th, so the defensive rise starts from a low base π
π Efficiency Landscape | Last 5 games
Real Madrid: best offense (130.6)
Panathinaikos: best defense (99.3)
Only 3 teams in the Dominant zone, the deepest just 0.7 pts past the border. Everyone stops at the edge π§
Baskonia, new coach: defense on the rise π
Checked both, Nick.
Olympiacos 24/25, Wright and Peters on court together: Net -4.5, DRTG 117.4 (104 min). Same two with Walkup off the court: Net -3.5, DRTG 116.1.
Offense is about the same as Milan (113.0 vs 111.5). The gap is almost all defense.
Got a lineup question like Nickβs? Ask me, Iβll run it.
Replying to @El_Statslab
Very nice observation. DRTG may not be a surprise.
It would be interesting to compare this with their stint in OLY. Maybe in lineups without Walkup, the picture could be similar. Thanks for sharing
Top Impact Pulse of this game:
K. Papanikolaou +1.01 (+49.9 NetRtg Ξ on/off)
S. Larkin +0.98 (+50.8 NetRtg Ξ on/off)
Only 6 Olympiacos players cleared the 20 possession threshold, with Bartzokas running a very tight rotation.

Milanβs two big summer signings, Peters and Wright, have not clicked yet.
Together: 130 minutes, a -26.9 NetRtg (111.5 ORTG, 138.4 DRTG).
Early sample, so I would not close the book. But this roster has too much quality to sit where it is. I will dig into Milan this weekend.
After Panathinaikos beat Baskonia, Nigel Hayes-Davis told Eurohoops the team needs to play as a team and not try to solve everything by themselves.
It made me want to see which units he shared the floor with, so I added a new feature on my site: you can now pick specific players and see every five man unit they played in together.
Hayes-Davis and Nunn in this game: 12.9 min over 4 units, ORTG 108.9, DRTG 116.9, NETRTG -8.1.
Step by step method in the next tweet π
Nigel Hayes-Davis after the tough Panathinaikos win over Baskonia:
"There's a lot of players that make a lot of money so we just made our shots.
But we played horrible... we didn't play up to the Panathinaikos standard. Especially with the names on the back of the jerseys we have in our locker room...
Everyone knows the names that we have in our locker room. We need to make sure we play basketball as a team and not try to solve everything by ourselves...
How to use it:
Go to the Lineup tab and select the team
Set the scope to βMatchβ and pick the game in the dropdown menu
Click βShow every unit of the matchβ so no filter on minutes played or possessions applies
At the bottom of the page, use the new filter to select specific players (see image)
A one line recap then gives you their minutes together, ORTG, DRTG and NETRTG.
π·πΈ Partizan won 85 to 82.
It won on the glass and at the shooting:
π OREB%: 38.2, +11.1 vs its season level. Big determination on the offensive glass, from the 20th OREB% before the game.
π eFG%: 56.2, +6.1 vs its season level, against the leagueβs best eFG% defense coming in
Almost the same shot volume (65 vs 64), but Partizan was binary: 68.4% on 2s, 25.9% on 3s.
Zvezda was average everywhere: 47.5% on 2s, 33.3% on 3s.
Credit to @gencoglumur for the idea of keeping only the two game logos and turning the other teams into dots. It makes the matchup much easier to read.
