Thrilled to finally see this one in print in the latest issue of AJPS! Some projects are long and complicated, especially ones like this when the data collection involves filing hundreds of FOIA requests. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/…
Nerd achievement unlocked. ✅ Growing up watching the PBS Newshour, last night's interview was a pinch-me moment. We discussed Congress's history with missing votes — and my research on abstention. (Not everything made the cut — but my cameo survived.) 🎥 pbs.org/newshour/show/republ…

How does power change what legislators do? New research from ERC affiliate @EllieNeffPowell and coauthors shows that as lawmakers gain power, they shift toward policy, while maintaining their level of constituent service as a result of greater capacity.

Thrilled to share that my paper with Devin Judge-Lord and @JustinGrimmer "How shifting priorities and capacity affect policy work and constituency service: Evidence from a census of legislator requests to U.S. federal agencies" is out at the AJPS onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/…
We find that legislators prioritize policy work as they gain institutional power, but simultaneously maintain their levels of constituency service. Moreover, when a new legislator replaces an experienced one, the district receives less constituency service & less policy work.
Looking for a great RA for the 2025-2026 academic year? I know a smart senior double-majoring in Poli Sci & Data Science who wants to RA for a year before starting her Ph.D. Python and R skills & interested in Amer & Comp -- Elections, Voting Behavior & Political Parties!

2024 Election Symposium was a treat as always. Grateful for the opportunity to share @EllieNeffPowell and I’s first look at corporate lobbying on the Electoral Count Reform Act of 2022. @ElectionsCenter
So great to have @vavreck here for @ElectionsCenter @uwmadison! Finds: identity-inflected policies shaping the political landscape. Harder to compromise about identity issues rather than economic issues. Argues big shift happened in *2016*. Gradual (tectonic shifts) earlier.
So great to have NPR's @FrancoOrdonez
here at the @ElectionsCenter 2024 Election Symposium @UWMadison sharing his insights from the campaign trail on the 2024 election!
Prof. Bernard Fraga @blfraga presenting "Shifting Right or Sitting Out? Black & Latino Voters: 2016-2024." Shows very large shift to GOP by Black men, continued shift to GOP by Latinos & Latinas. Some evidence of Democrats' base staying home in 2024.

Full polling methodology at the end: nytimes.com/interactive/2024…
I spent some time this morning diving into the admirably detailed polling methods for the NYT/Siena poll to understand how they weight on party in states like WI that don't have party reg and don't record which party primary you participated in.
