If you missed my remarks on the case for Sovereign AI, here’s my talk from Coordinating British Progress on Friday. Thanks again both @aeronlaffere and @lilygeidelberg for organising and to @WalkerMarcus for generously hosting us in the extraordinary setting of St Bartholomew the Great. machinepower.substack.com/p/…

I do enjoy the fact that North Macedonia's entire history is rejected by all its neighbours. Greece made it change its name and give up any claim to Alexander the Great, Bulgaria insists its language and medieval kings are Bulgarian, the Albanians claim Skopje-born Mother Teresa as their own, and the Serbian church refused to recognise the Macedonian one until 2022. Consequently, I expect great things from North Macedonia.
🇲🇰 The stone bridge in North Macedonia’s capital, Skopje, has been illuminated with Turkish funding, surrounded by buildings inspired by ancient Greek architecture.

Tried to drop off clothes at four charity shops today — none of which were taking clothes. We're so back.

This is like that dress. It's clearly dark blue not black.
In black, the regions that are poorer today than in 2014.

In the West anyway.
For now AI timelines still bend to human politics.

My suggestion that every data centre should come with a public sauna seems less ridiculous by the day.
Voters delivered an overwhelming message on data centers this week, and it is incumbent upon industry actors to hear that message and respond to it by building AI infrastructure in ways that benefit both individual communities and the country as a whole.
32
The only thing that can enforce this is AI but by his own measure any AI in the public sector must add jobs. Will this add jobs?
🚨 NEW: Andy Burnham has announced employers will be legally required to publish salaries on job adverts "You should know what a job pays before spending your time and effort applying for it"

Always wondered what would have happened if Malta had been allowed by the Americans to join the UK. One of the easiest adventures in life is Malta.

I do find it odd the endless bad law writing that leads to sentencing when we have no prison space.

A Chinese chip breakthrough would ensure this. A breakthrough anywhere actually.
BREAKING: Odds of the AI bubble bursting by year-end surge as U.S. technology stocks plunge in a massive Wall Street selloff. 14% chance.

This post has opened up a wide range of philosophical interpretations. Theories spanning from the existential (that we are already living inside a massive data centre), to the borderline perverse (users proudly celebrating their AI waifus).
Most US couples now meet in a data centre.

Powell's Fridges of Blood speech warns of this.
JUST IN: French blood bank hit by cyber attack with blood samples being heated to 110 degrees Celsius from their maintained -30, per Le Canard Enchaîné.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The 110 °C figure was the value hacked equipment was reprogrammed to reach, which does not mean the cold rooms or plasma bags actually reached 110 °C. France's health ministry said the anomalies were spotted in time, with no operational consequences. cyberattaque.org/cyberattaque-c…

Democrats took Congress on Tuesday, and 56% of voters told an exit poll that AI and data centres were a crucial or major factor in their vote. But the bigger change for American AI isn’t in Washington. The industry has just lost much of its political cover. 🧵

Trump also wants a federal law overriding state AI rules, such as New York’s safety law. That now looks far harder to pass, so those state rules are more likely to survive.

The industry has failed to win over the public, and that’s the Achilles heel of America’s lead in the AI race. Jensen Huang’s answer is that if a community doesn’t want a data centre, you should “find another community”. The problem is there might not be one.
