A person in a car could drive from Salt Lake City to St. George faster than a homeless person would be able to walk from downtown Salt Lake City to the most remote of the sites being considered for a new shelter. crossroadsurbancenter.org/2/…
NIMBYism literally leaving unsheltered Utahns out in the cold.
The arguments are the same ones we hear over and over again re: siting shelters/services/housing: "I am all for helping those less fortunate, BUT ..."
No action was taken on the first code blue in Davis County called Tuesday after backlash from the proposed host community. ksl.com/article/51183433/fru…
But in SLC, I live 3 blocks from a shelter, 1 block from treatment housing, and less than a mile from a church that WILL be hosting people for Code Blue. And I would be proud — and grateful! — if the OTHER church in my neighborhood offered to bring even more people in.

Utah voters, @ me about your voting experience. Any long lines? Where? Any troubles casting your vote — or has it gone smoothly? Let me know! #utpol
Had a pre-Election Day chat with @mckaycoppins on @CityCastSLC about the impact of LDS voters in Utah and nationally, this election and beyond. Like, could they really turn Utah purple someday??🤷♀️#utpol megaphone.link/CC9938682255

Not a single Republican running for Congress — including Rep. John Curtis, who will likely be Utah’s next U.S. senator — responded to @sltrib's 2024 elections survey. All Democrats answered your questions. (1/5)

Jose took @CityCastSLC listeners on a journey along the Jordan River, from Salt Lake City down to Draper. Read his in-depth reporting, and listen to the companion episodes (linked in the story or wherever you listen to podcasts).
Weekend plans: Grab a tiger's blood slush from Millie's Burgers, and listen to Andy and me chat about the news of the week.
I went on @CityCastSLC today to talk about the SLC planning commission’s meeting about the MLB ballpark district; plus some talk about Utah’s uncontested Legislative races; plus an ode to Millie’s Burgers:

This was a real labor of love. And so many folks from @CityCastSLC and @sltrib made it happen. I hope both the pod and story itself help people understand how the river and its trail became the way they are in SLC. Here’s the story: sltrib.com/news/2024/10/15/s…
Stay tuned for Part 2!

The @CityCastSLC team and I are so excited to partner with the Trib and @joserdavila4 on this exploration of the Jordan River in SLC and beyond. Listen to this first episode and catch pt. 2 on Monday.

Both Lindsay and I tried to get Gov. Cox to give a direct answer as to how he might vote on Constitutional Amendment D.
He wouldn’t ⬇️
At tonight's debate @coxforgovernor wasn't super clear on how he would vote on Amendment D, or whether he full on supports it. He did say he believes it's important for both the initiative process to exist and the legislature have the ability to alter them. Then he said he doesn't have the ability to weigh in on this (with a vote to put it on the ballot he's right, he definitely can share his opinion on whether we should change the Constitution anytime).
After the debate Cox was pressed again on whether he supports Amendment D. Cox said he is very concerned about lawyers already using language that only applies to the function of government on any initiative. He said he understands the arguments on both sides.
"On balance it's worth supporting but it's close and I see why people are opposed to it," he said.
Does this mean he supports it?
He also said if would have written the question, he would have "done some things differently."
He was then asked directly by @emilyreanderson at the end of this video -- how would you mark your ballot? Cox said he answered that.

Got together from the folks at
@CityCastSLC
to discuss all the moving parts with Amendment D — what it does, what the ballot says it does, why it matters and some of the current legal machinations.
Take 20ish mins and get up to speed.

A few tidbits on some of the Amendment D questions I'm seeing online:
1. The amendment was written by President @JStuartAdams /Speaker @mschultz_12 because in Jan of 2024 Utah changed the law to allow ballot questions to be written by "presiding officers" instead of legislative lawyers.
2. This would make this the first ever ballot question written by those two office holders and not independent #utleg lawyers, the Pres/Speaker said in their statement that they modeled this language after past ballot questions.
3. It's unknown whether they got feedback on the language from any legal counsel.
4. There's not much recourse for the language short of an injunction but someone with standing has to file, ballots head to print (if they haven't already) within a week depending on the county.
WATCH: The new public language of Amendment D dealing with initiatives has opponents calling it deceptive, slanted, and an advertisement, while Utah's top two GOP lawmakers who wrote it say it's straightforward and concise. @KSL5TV #utpol 👇👇
