New blog post---Truth is not a direction! LLMs embed sentences in semantic spaces where directions correspond to concepts. There seems to be a direction that corresponds to "truth"! That is great news for alignment, but can lead to paradoxes under Tarski-like attacks. (link 👇)

NEW PAPER ALERT:🚨🚨🚨 An improved Causal Emergence 2.0 (better, faster, stronger) by @Abelaer and myself, is now out. We show how to engineer systems to be either really complex (causation spread out across the multiscale structure) OR have just a single emergent macroscale.

Finally, our work on rethinking tipping is set to appear in The American Naturalists. Find the accepted version here journals.uchicago.edu/doi/10…. Once again thanks to all the co-authors including @maxrietkerk @MaraBaudena. Thanks to @MSCActions and @EmergenceDIEP for funding. 1/2
Check out our latest preprint on how we should rethink tipping points in spatial ecosystems. Thanks to all the coauthors including @maxrietkerk, @MaraBaudena and others who are not on twitter. Also grateful to @MSCActions for funding this research (1/n) arxiv.org/abs/2306.13571

🔥 A new paper expands the theory of #thermodynamics of computation. By combining approaches from statistical physics and computer science, SFI’s David Wolpert and Gülce Kardes (@zenkogulce), with Gonzalo Manzano and Édgar Roldán (@edgarroldankb), introduce mathematical equations that reveal the energy costs of computational processes that depend on #randomness. 🪫 Their approach offers insights into particularly tricky questions about the energy costs of unpredictable runtimes and of irreversible problems. santafe.edu/news-center/news…
