I might be too online for spotting it immediately but I’m cackling at all the responses unaware that this is JFK’s admission essay.
The literacy crisis is real. A friend sent me this: this is an essay that successfully got someone admitted to Harvard.

There’s so many reasons why I think this line of reasoning is wrong and ill-advised, but it’s pretty telling the article itself only refers to US-based experts and not a single Canadian expert on the subject (be it of defence, nuclear, etc.).

The whole section about CANDUs and the lack of IAEA checks is honestly dangerously close to disinformation through omission.

Les gens à la permanence du @BlocQuebecois devraient se réveiller et vérifier les accès du compte de leur chef, je pense.

Continually amazed by how Poilievre and his team are just completely incapable of recalibrating, the only thing they’re comfortable with is doubling down.
Pierre Poilievre: "Do we want a political aristocracy or do we want economic meritocracy?"

The underlying sentiment isn't fundamentally wrong (credentials are not everything), but I don't think it's a very productive fight for the Tories to pick up after another defection and three by-election faceplants. Just a waste of time and energy while living in a glass house.
If you have a degree from a fancy University, but believe: Money printing doesn’t cause inflation; Net-zero policies create prosperity ; Governments can pick winners and losers better than free markets; Then you have been badly educated. Remember, lots of world leaders with impressive degrees have inflicted great harm on their countries. Carney’s diplomas can’t cover up the fact he had a terrible tenure at the Bank of England. Or that he is giving Canada the worst economy in the G7.

Perish the thought of even daring to workshop policy a bit in public
We support it, we’re upset about it, we think it’s bad, but also, we might join in. -PM Mark Carney, the last 72 hours

Reposted without comments. 🤷🏻‍♂️
PM Mark Carney says the U.S.-Israel war against Iran is a failure of the international order. "The current conflict is another example of the failure of the international order." "The United States and Israel have acted without engaging the United Nations or consulting allies, including Canada."

There’s a world of difference between acknowledging the selectiveness of intl norms and actively cheering and supporting its destruction. The former while calibrating behaviour is pragmatic and realistic, the latter, on the other hand, is inherently self-defeating.

This attack is illegal under U.S. law and under international law. The Constitution says Congress declares war, not the president.  He needed consent from Congress. This is also a violation of the UN Charter, as Iran did not attack the United States. cbsnews.com/live-updates/isr…

I really disagree with the notion that opposing US action would get Canada nothing *in the long run*. Seems to me like people are over-correcting after the Davos speech by assuming we live in a completely norms-free world, whereas norms still exist.
Replying to @JessMarinDavis
Two things: a) Vocally opposing the US's action gets Canada nothing, so this tepid support makes sense. b) The real support is in action, not words. I doubt we'll see any assets, resources, or tools deployed to support the US-Iran war.

They may be weak, or getting weaker, but that is not a unidirectional process and norms can be both weakened and strengthened. If we take the US threat to 🇨🇦 sovereignty seriously, then we should be wary of supporting *any* action that undermines this specific norm.
27
The real trouble with Carney’s « realism » is that it could really be also branded unsophisticated and short-term opportunism. Scoring points by appeasing the US but doing so by weakening sovereignty norms isn’t the most brilliant long-term trade I’ve ever seen.
You misunderstood parts of Carney's Davos speech. It was a call to realism and to put Canada's more narrowly defined interests ahead of universalist principles (which we have too often failed to do in the past). Deal with the world as it is, not as you wished it were.

attacking a prime minister over his wealth and assets after he waltzed into office in big part because he’s believed to be a financial wizard sure seems like an interesting strategy to me, let’s see how it pans out

the median voter (my mother) loves Carney because she thinks he’s successful and he’ll work his magic to save of us all, I really don’t think the Tories will get her support with this strategy

who could’ve predicted the guy who’s mainly known for harassing elected officials in the streets would be a problematic leadership candidate for any national party and have wacky takes on a lot of things
