Tomorrow is karwa chauth. Everyone keeps getting shocked when I tell them I don't fast. "Kyu?" They ask with big shocked judgmental eyes. 'Because we don't have karwachauth in our families. Never had. No one from my side of the family celebrated karwachauth. Neither has anyone from my in-laws side. Both my sis-in-laws also don't because in their sasural also there was no culture of karwachauth fasting and chalni-moon ritual.' We celebrate and fast during Teej for our spouse. The elders in the house say this karwachauth trend has picked up in the last decade or two. And I feel its true to an extent. Never heard my grandmother or mother or buas or mausis keep karwachauth. Even as a school kid, I saw this more in Bollywood movies than actually being done by regimental Aunties or mothers of my friends. Not complaining or questioning those who keep karwachauth... Good for you if you do. But why do people like me get shocked and judged when we say hamare yahan Teej manate hai, not karwachauth...
