DG, ECN, LEADS NIGERIA’S FORMAL ADMISSION INTO GLOBAL BIOENERGY PARTNERSHIP, ADVANCES NATIONAL ENERGY AGENDA. Nigeria has recorded a landmark achievement in its sustainable energy development journey following its formal admission as a member country of the Global Bioenergy Partnership (GBEP), an international platform advancing sustainable bioenergy development and global cooperation. The Director-General/Chief Executive Officer of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), Dr Mustapha Abdullahi, represented the Federal Government at the 32nd GBEP Steering Committee Meeting in Rome, Italy, where he formally endorsed the Partnership’s Terms of Reference on behalf of Nigeria, marking a defining moment in the country’s international bioenergy engagement. The historic development represents a major achievement for Nigeria and a testament to the Federal Government’s commitment to unlocking the nation’s vast bioenergy potential. In his acceptance speech, Dr Abdullahi expressed Nigeria’s profound appreciation to GBEP, reaffirming the country’s determination to contribute meaningfully to global efforts towards sustainable bioenergy, energy security and climate action. Nigeria’s admission follows the recent approval of the Strategic Plan of the Nigeria Bioenergy Partnership by the Federal Executive Council, reinforcing the nation’s policy direction and institutional commitment to the sector. Addressing the international community, Dr Abdullahi presented Nigeria as a compelling destination for sustainable bioenergy investment, drawing attention to its abundant agricultural resources, extensive biomass potential and opportunities across bioethanol, biodiesel, biogas, biomass power generation, sustainable aviation fuel and waste-to-energy. He called on GBEP partners and the global investment community to deepen collaboration with Nigeria, stressing the importance of strategic partnerships, investment mobilisation and an enabling policy environment in translating the country’s resources into sustainable economic and environmental value. As Nigeria’s designated Focal Point to GBEP, the Energy Commission of Nigeria will coordinate the country’s active participation in the Partnership’s programmes on sustainability, capacity building and international knowledge exchange. Nigeria’s admission into the Partnership establishes a stronger platform for international cooperation, investment opportunities and knowledge transfer, positioning the country to play a more consequential role in shaping the future of sustainable bioenergy in Africa and beyond. This is undoubtedly a landmark achievement for Nigeria and Africa, marking a significant step forward in the continent’s sustainable bioenergy development and global engagement.

A major priority of my leadership at the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) is positioning Nigeria as a producer, not just a consumer, of renewable energy technologies. Through our strategic partnership with LONGi, a global leader in solar technology, we are advancing plans to establish local solar panel manufacturing capacity of between 500MW and 1GW. This initiative is designed to strengthen domestic production, promote technology transfer and reduce Nigeria’s dependence on imported solar panels. Beyond manufacturing, this partnership represents an investment in Nigeria’s industrial growth, job creation, local expertise and energy security. Our vision is to build a sustainable renewable energy value chain that creates economic opportunities while accelerating Nigeria’s transition to clean and reliable energy. #DAM3YearsECN #RenewableEnergy #ECNAchievements
Three years of impact. 38 milestones achieved: A New Energy Future for Nigeria Three years ago, we set out to strengthen Nigeria’s energy future through bold reforms, innovation and purposeful leadership. Today, 38 milestones reflect concrete progress, from the gazetting of the National Energy Policy and National Energy Master Plan to advances in solar power, clean cooking, hydrogen development and renewable energy. Our mission has been to turn policy into action and innovation into impact. Through solarisation of healthcare and educational facilities, expansion of mini-grids, growth of local energy manufacturing and strategic international partnerships, we continue to improve lives, empower communities and create opportunities. As we mark these milestones, I express profound appreciation to His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for his visionary leadership and steadfast support under the Renewed Hope Agenda, and to the Honourable Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Dr. @KingsleyUdehSAN, for his strategic guidance and partnership in driving Nigeria’s energy transformation. I remain resolute in our commitment to position Nigeria as a leader in clean energy innovation and sustainable development. #DAM3YearsAtECN

One of the significant milestones of my leadership at the Energy Commission of Nigeria is the successful solarisation of the Commission’s headquarters with a 1 MW solar power system. This investment has transformed our power supply, enabling the Commission to operate independently of the national grid. Today, our headquarters runs entirely on solar energy, eliminating the need for diesel generators and demonstrating the practical benefits of clean energy adoption. I commend President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his Renewed Hope Agenda and commitment to advancing renewable energy development across Nigeria. Through the Commission’s solarisation projects, we are translating this national vision into tangible results, leading by example and demonstrating that a cleaner, more reliable and sustainable energy future is achievable. #DAM3YearsAtECN #RenewableEnergy #EnergyCommissionNG

I had the privilege of inaugurating the Investment Committee of the Nigeria Bioenergy Partnership (NBEP), following the Federal Executive Council’s approval of the Partnership’s Strategic Plan on 19 August 2026. This marks an important step towards unlocking Nigeria’s bioenergy potential and translating it into tangible economic opportunities. I have charged the committee to deliver a comprehensive Investment Prospectus and a pipeline of bankable projects within 90 days, focusing on project preparation, financial structuring, risk mitigation, and investor engagement. With an estimated financing requirement of US$3 billion over five years, our priority is to attract investment into bioethanol production, biogas, waste-to-energy, and biomass power generation. I am confident that through strong partnerships and effective implementation, we can harness Nigeria’s abundant biomass resources to strengthen energy security, create jobs, reduce emissions, and drive economic diversification. I commend His Excellency President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for his visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to the Renewed Hope Agenda, which continues to create the enabling environment for sustainable development and private-sector investment in Nigeria’s clean energy sector. #NigeriaBioenergy #EnergyCommissionNG __ DAM
