The Panama aftershock sequence continues to be energetic. Of comparable sequences in the past, 1 in 12 have produced an additional M7+ quake, and fully half have produced at least one more M6+

It's possible that the @NOAA_HurrHunter aircraft just measured the first solid evidence of vertical shear directly attacking the eyewall of Hurricane #Isaias. The last penetration measured an anomalous temperature spike at 750mb within the SW eyewall -—not within the eye—7C higher than the previously measured eye maximum. This might be evidence of a rapidly descending flow belt caused by shear laterally forcing external air into the eyewall region, leading to a massive subsidence inversion. This is often observed in high-resolution modeling (see HAFS sounding from this morning's 06Z run). The dewpoint also sharply decreased concurrent with the temperature spike measured by aircraft, supporting the possibility that this phenomenon was observed. This could foretell significant erosion of the southern eyewall in the near future, but time will tell. For now, Isaias remains as strong as ever according to the same aircraft data.

JUST IN: Saildrone Explorer SD-1045 passed through the eye of Category 3 Hurricane Isaias, recording wind gusts over 90 knots (103 mph). This is the same USV that filmed inside Hurricane Sam in 2021, setting a Guinness World Record. Watch ↓ @NOAA_AOML @noaapmel

Hurricane #Isaias is expected to make landfall on the Central Gulf Coast later today, bringing a threat of heavy rainfall and flash flooding to the region. Numerous instances of flash flooding are likely, some of which will be significant. Rainfall of 4-8" across southern Alabama, the Florida Panhandle and Big Bend, and southwest Georgia. Localized totals up to 15" are possible, particularly within banding across the Florida Panhandle and Big Bend. Across much of the remainder of the Southeast, rainfall of 2-5 inches are expected. Localized higher amounts up to 10" are possible, especially across the Southern Appalachians and coastal Carolinas.
