Here is the link to a paper that just came out on "Social interactions in medaka". sciencedirect.com/science/ar… It's a story that was spearheaded by Roy Harpaz, where he looked into the fish's sensitivity to social cues, and how this sensitivity depends on the current swim state.

Here is a fun Bloomberg "Hello World" Video that just got released. It's about the connectomics efforts of the Lichtman and Engert labs. youtube.com/watch?v=OAWISbU9…

8) Specifically, we propose that the animal calculates the "retinal clutter" in each eye, and then turns towards the lower clutter value at young ages, and towards the higher clutter value when they are older.

7) Importantly, these virtual reality setting can then be used to dissect the precise details and algorithms by which the raw visual information projected on the retina is processed and transformed into appropriate motor commands.

6) Both, the early avoidance and later emergent attraction, are readily replicated in virtual reality settings, where conspecific visual cues are replaced with projected dots on a screen, which confirms that the visual modality is sufficient to evoke the behavior.

10) reconstruct all hair cells in the neuromast, all afferent neurites that send information from the hair cells to the posterior lateral line ganglion, all the efferent neurites from the cholinergic and dopaminergic nuclei and, importantly, all the synapses involved.

And here is a simulation of younger larvae - with more immature reflexes - who do neither.

Here is a video of five simulated fish swimming together that just follow the two rules described above. They are clearly schooling and shoaling :-).

To come up with a plausible circuit implementation of this model, we used whole-brain calcium imaging. We found cells in the anterior hindbrain with very slow integration time constants, and a set of neurons that are well-suited to implement the thresholding operation.
