Probably the greatest live football watching night of my life, never been so drained, so nervous, so deafened… a game that had everything in the most iconic arena 🦁 🦁 🦁 🏴

Even from home in the middle of the night it was epic. Best experience of watching England without being at the stadium. The people who actually attended are likely to never top it.

It was against Croatia that England produced their most stylish attacking performance at this summer’s World Cup, but it was nothing on tonight.
Thomas Tuchel’s side sizzled, tearing a bedraggled opponent apart time and again. The first half, in particular, was a footballing mismatch.
Croatia’s best days might be behind them, but it would be hard to see any international side containing England on this form.
They are a joy to behold when let off the leash like this.

What on earth was the manager doing?
A place in a World Cup Final was in the palm of the hand, and well and truly thrown away.
Southgate was given so much unfair stick over the years, but that last 25 minutes was 10x worse than anything under his management.

We go deeper into tournaments as a matter of course now.
It isn’t by chance.
It’s because people like Trevor Brooking, Gareth Southgate and Steve Cooper oversaw and implemented structural changes in the way that the England set-up works.
All we’ve needed is a manger and a group of players to finish the job.
I believe we have them.
But then I believed in 90, 92, 96, 98, 00, 02, 04, 06, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20(21), 22 and 24.
But this time, I REALLY believe.

England fans unfairly get a bad reputation, but actually looking at the scenes from Mexico and elsewhere?
Our fans are clearly the best in the world.

Incredible 2 days in Mexico City. Exemplary hosts for a World Cup, impossible to move without seeing green shirts, World Cup murals on every wall & took defeat with enormous grace. US has more modern stadia to rake in the $ FIFA want, but rest of WC is poorer for leaving Mexico

I've been lucky enough to play football, even partake in great games, commentate on big global finals and support England since my first England v Scotland schoolboy international in the early 80's.
I have never experienced intensity, partisan support and emotional stress than tonight at the Azteca.
A truly momentous occasion.

The Mexican fans were just incredible. The noise they made, the atmosphere they created and they are still partying. They've been astonishing. They were howling the place down - but then stopped out of respect for England's national anthem. Different level. Class.

A word on the Mexicans too. I’ve only seen people be friendly and welcoming. On my way out I saw England fans at a bar singing Hey Jude with Mexico fans. This is a wonderful city with wonderful people. If you ever get the chance to visit, don’t hesitate.

Welcome to Mexico. Bienvenidos a México. Que esta experiencia permanezca con ustedes para toda la vida.
